Vitamin D and Atopy.

چکیده
Theoharis C. Theoharides, MS, MPhil, PhD, MD, FAAAAI Vitamin D is primarily found in vertebrates and it is mostly responsible for calcium homeostasis and maintenance of healthy bones. Natural vitamin D is obtained from intake of fish oils and other animal sources. Interestingly, microalgae contain both pre vitamin D and active vitamin D3. In humans, vitamin D synthesis is initiated in the skin by a photochemical conversion of pre vitamin D3 by ultraviolet B rays, followed by isomerization to vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Vitamin D then undergoes the first hydroxylation in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3], the circulating metabolite, which is what is meant when the term vitamin D is used in this Editorial. The active form of vitamin D is 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] (calcitriol) and is synthesized primarily in the kidneys. 1

Vitamin D and atopy and asthma phenotypes in children.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW To give an overview of the recent research into whether a lack of vitamin D contributes to the development of atopy and asthma in childhood. RECENT FINDINGS I describe here the recent epidemiological studies relating vitamin D status to atopy and asthma in children, focusing on determinants of major asthma phenotypes in childhood. Recent findings include the observations tha...
متن کاملInfant vitamin d supplementation and allergic conditions in adulthood: northern Finland birth cohort 1966.
Allergen-induced secretion of Th2-type cytokines and IgE production have recently been reported to be increased in mice treated with 1,25(OH)(2)D, the active form of vitamin D. Our objective was to investigate whether vitamin D supplementation in infancy is associated with the risk of atopy, allergic rhinitis, and asthma. The Northern Finland Birth Cohort consists of all individuals in the two ...
متن کاملSuboptimal Vitamin D Status in a Population-Based Study of Asian Children: Prevalence and Relation to Allergic Diseases and Atopy
BACKGROUND New evidence shows high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in many countries and some studies suggest a possible link between vitamin D status and allergic diseases. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of suboptimal vitamin D status in a population sample of Asian children and to investigate the relationship of vitamin D status with allergic diseases and ato...

OBJECTIVE To determine the associations between serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 levels and pulmonary function test outcomes and atopy in children with asthma. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY Pediatric pulmonology outpatient clinic and pediatric outpatient clinic, from December 2012 to March 2013. METHODOLOGY Atotal of 71 asthmatic children and 77 healthy contro...
متن کاملAsthma and genes encoding components of the vitamin D pathway
BACKGROUND Genetic variants at the vitamin D receptor (VDR) locus are associated with asthma and atopy. We hypothesized that polymorphisms in other genes of the vitamin D pathway are associated with asthma or atopy. METHODS Eleven candidate genes were chosen for this study, five of which code for proteins in the vitamin D metabolism pathway (CYP27A1, CYP27B1, CYP2R1, CYP24A1, GC) and six that...
