چکیده

The generalized nonlinear Schrödinger (GNLS) equation is solved numerically by a split-step Fourier method. The first, second and fourth-order versions of the method are presented. A classical problem concerning the motion of a single solitary wave is used to compare the first, second and fourth-order schemes in terms of the accuracy and the computational cost. This numerical experiment shows that the split-step Fourier method provides highly accurate solutions for the GNLS equation and that the fourth-order scheme is computationally more efficient than the first-order and second-order schemes. Furthermore, two test problems concerning the interaction of two solitary waves and an exact solution that blows up in finite time, respectively, are investigated by using the fourth-order split-step scheme and particular attention is paid to the conserved quantities as an indicator of the accuracy. The question how the present numerical results are related to those obtained in the literature is discussed. © 2004 IMACS. Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Averaging for split-step scheme

The split-step Fourier method for solving numerically nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) is considered as NLS with rapidly varying coefficients. This connection is exploited to justify the split-step approximation using an averaging technique. The averaging is done up to the second order and it is explained why (in this context) symmetric split-step produces a higher order scheme. The same a...

Optimization of the Split-step Fourier Method in Modeling Optical Fiber Communications Systems

We studied the efficiency of different implementations of the split-step Fourier method for solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation that employ different step size selection criteria. We compared the performance of the different implementations for a variety of pulse formats and systems including higher-order solitons, collisions of soliton pulses, a single-channel periodically-stationary di...

Stability analysis of the split-step Fourier method on the background of a soliton of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We analyze a numerical instability that occurs in the well-known split-step Fourier method on the background of a soliton. This instability is found to be very sensitive to small changes of the parameters of both the numerical grid and the soliton, unlike the instability of most finite-difference schemes. Moreover, the principle of “frozen coefficients”, in which variable coefficients are treat...

Investigation on Propagation Characteris- Tics of Super-gaussian Beam in Highly Non- Local Medium

We investigate the propagation characteristics of superGaussian beam in highly nonlocal nonlinear media. The optical beam propagation has been modeled by well known nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The variational method is employed to find the initial beam propagation parameters and then split step Fourier method is used for numerical simulations. A generalized exact analytical solutio...

High Order Embedded Runge-kutta Scheme for Adaptive Step-size Control in the Interaction Picture Method

The Interaction Picture (IP) method is a valuable alternative to Split-step methods for solving certain types of partial differential equations such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equation or the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Although very similar to the Symmetric Split-step (SS) method in its inner computational structure, the IP method results from a change of unknown and therefore do not involve ...
