چکیده

Lightning is located by using the time of group arrival (TOGA) of the VLF (3–30 kHz) radiation from a lightning stroke. The dispersed waveform (“sferic”) of the lightning impulse is processed at each receiving site. The TOGA is determined relative to GPS at each site from the progression of phase versus frequency using the whole wave train. Unlike current VLF methods which require transmission of the whole wave train from each site to a central processing site, the TOGA method requires transmission of a single number (the TOGA) for lightning location calculation. The stable propagation and low attenuation of VLF waves in the Earth–ionosphere waveguide (EIWG) allows a wide spacing of receiver sites of several thousand kilometer so that a truly global location service could be provided using only ∼10 receiver sites. c © 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Location accuracy of VLF World-Wide Lightning Location (WWLL) network: Post-algorithm upgrade

An experimental VLF World-Wide Lightning Location (WWLL) network has been developed through collaborations with research institutions across the globe. The aim of the WWLL is to provide global real-time locations of lightning discharges, with >50% CG flash detection efficiency and mean location accuracy of <10 km. While these goals are essentially arbitrary, they do define a point where the WWL...

Location accuracy of long distance VLF lightning location network

An experimental VLF WorldWide Lightning Location (WWLL) network is being developed to provide realtime locations of cloud to ground lightning discharges occurring throughout the globe. This network has expanded from a limited number of stations in the Western Pacific to its current state of 11 stations, in most longitude sectors, with additional stations planned in the near future. As part of t...

Orthogonal Magnetic Loop Antenna for Lightning Detection

Lightning discharge emits RF energy over a wide range of frequencies. During cloud to ground lightning, when high currents occur in previously ionized channels, the most powerful emissions occur in the Very Low Frequency range. VLF (very low frequency) refers to radio frequencies spectrum range of 3 kHz to 30 kHz. Detection of lightning makes it possible to avoid various harmful effects occurri...

Detection efficiency of the VLF World-Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN): initial case study

An experimental Very Low Frequency (VLF) World-Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) has been developed through collaborations with research institutions across the world, providing global real-time locations of lightning discharges. As of April 2006, the network included 25 stations providing coverage for much of the Earth. In this paper we examine the detection efficiency of the WWLLN by co...

Location Accuracy Evaluation of ToA-Based Lightning Location Systems over Mountainous Terrain

In this paper, we analyze the location error of Time of Arrival (ToA)-based lightning location systems (LLSs) resulting from propagation over mountainous terrain. For the analysis, we have considered the region around the Säntis Tower, located in the Swiss Alps. The study is based on a full-wave finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) approach and the two-dimensional (2D) topographic maps along th...
