Inducing Social Norms in Laboratory Allocation Choices
نویسندگان
چکیده
Social norms involve observation by others and external sanctions for violations, while moral norms involve introspection and internal sanctions. To study such norms and their effects, we design a laboratory experiment. We examine dictator choices, where we create a shared understanding by providing advice from peers with no financial payoff at stake. We vary whether advice is given, as well as whether choices are made public. This design allows us to explicitly separate the effects of moral and social norms. We find that choices are in fact affected by a combination of observability and the shared understanding. * CREED, Amsterdam School of Economics, Roetersstraat 11, 1018 WB Amsterdam. متن کاملWhat Behaviors are Disapproved? Experimental Evidence from Five Dictator Games
The literature on social norms has often stressed that social disapproval is crucial to foster compliance with norms and promote fair and cooperative behavior. With this in mind, we explore the disapproval of allocation decisions using experimental data from five dictator games with a feedback stage. Our data suggests that subjects are heterogeneous in their disapproval patterns, distinguishing...
متن کاملHealthy and unhealthy social norms and food selection. Findings from a field-experiment
The behavior of others in people's social environment (i.e., descriptive norms), as well as their opinions regarding appropriate actions (i.e., injunctive norms) strongly influence people's decisions and actions. The goal of this study was to extend prior laboratory research on the influence of social norms on food choices, by conducting a field-experiment in an on-campus food court. One of thr...
متن کاملSocial and Moral Norms in the Laboratory
Social norms involve observation by others and external sanctions for violations, while moral norms involve introspection and internal sanctions. We develop a simple model of individual preferences that incorporates moral and social norms. We then examine dictator choices, where we create a shared understanding by providing advice from peers with no financial payoff at stake. We vary whether ad...
متن کاملSocial Insurance, Work Norms, and the Allocation of Talent
In countries where social insurance is generous, individuals endorse relatively weak work norms; however, weaker work norms are not associated with worse economic performance, neither at the country level nor at the individual level. I develop a model of endogenous work norms that rationalizes that evidence. Weak work norms do not harm labor productivity because they improve the allocation of i...
