چکیده

This document provides an introduction to the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) instrument, its observing modes, capabilities and to the required calibration observations. It has been prepared by the project scientist, Emeritus Professor Michael Dopita. Any questions, comments or grouses should be addressed to: [email protected]. Sections 2–9 describing the instrument are adapted from the paper: Dopita, M.., Hart, J, McGregor, P., Oates, P & Jones, D. 2007, "The Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS)", Ap&SS, 310, 255. That paper must be referenced in any paper which has used observations obtained with the WiFeS instrument. Important Notice: During their observational run observers must not touch or alter any part of the instrument or its electrical connections. Failure to observe this notice may result in irreparable damage to the instrument. Observers must seek technical assistance in the case of any and all instrument problems.

The Wide Field Spectrograph ( WiFeS )

This paper describes the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) under construction at the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) of the Australian National University (ANU) for the ANU 2.3m telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory. WiFeS is a powerful integral field, double-beam, concentric, image-slicing spectrograph designed to deliver excellent thoughput, wavelength stability, spect...

Galaxy Mergers Drive Shocks: an Integral Field Study of Goals Galaxies

We present an integral field spectroscopic study of radiative shocks in 27 nearby ultraluminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) from the Great Observatory All-sky LIRG Survey, a subset of the Revised Bright Galaxy Sample. Our analysis of the resolved spectroscopic data from the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) focuses on determining the detailed properties of the emission line gas, incl...

ATLAS: a Cassegrain spectrograph based on volume phase holographic gratings

We are proposing a new spectrograph (ATLAS) which would revolutionise intermediate-dispersion observations at the AAT. Based on the new technology of Volume Phase Holographic gratings, and using transmission optics, ATLAS offers high throughput and a wide field (24′). It will be ideally suited to extensive surveys of faint objects. It has been designed with a collimated beam diameter of 150 mm,...

Simulations for Multi-Object Spectrograph Planet Surveys

Radial velocity surveys for extra-solar planets generally require substantial amounts of large telescope time in order to monitor a sufficient number of stars. Two of the aspects which can limit such surveys are the single-object capabilities of the spectrograph, and an inefficient observing strategy for a given observing window. In addition, the detection rate of extra-solar planets using the ...

× optical zoom and extreme optical image stabilisation : diffraction limited integral field spectroscopy with the SWIFT spectrograph

When commissioned in November 2008 at the Palomar 200 inch Hale Telescope, the Oxford SWIFT I&z band integral field spectrograph, fed by the adaptive optics system PALAO, provided a wide (3×) range of spatial resolutions: three plate scales of 235 mas, 160 mas, and 80 mas per spaxel over a contiguous field-of-view of 89×44 pixels. Depending on observing conditions and guide star brightness we c...
