چکیده

This paper describes a new surface normal smoothing process which can be used in conjunction with shape-fromshading. Rather than directly smoothing the surface normal vectors, we exert control over their directions by smoothing the field of principal curvature vectors. To do this we develop a topography sensitive smoothing process which overcomes the problems of singularities in the field of principal curvature directions at the locations of umbilics and saddles. The method is evaluated on both synthetic and real-world images. 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Terrain Modeling in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images Using Shape-from-Shading

In this paper we introduce a new approach for recovering shape-from-shading (SFS) from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of the terrain. Three contributions are proposed. Firstly, we show how the direction of surface normals is constrained by the geometry of the radar reflectivity cone. Second, we show how topographic features can be used as boundary constraints on the recovered surface nor...

Combining Probabilistic Shape-from-Shading and Statistical Facial Shape Models

In this thesis we present an approach to combine a probabilistic Shape-fromShading algorithm with statistical models of facial shapes. Thesis presents how Fisher-Bingham (FB8) distributions are sampled using Gibbs sampling to give normal distributions on the tangent plane. These normal distributions are in turn combined with normal distributions arising from statistical models of facial shapes....

A Mumford-Shah Diffusion Process for Shape-from-Shading

In this paper we show how the Mumford-Shah functional can be used to derive diffusion kernels that can be employed in the recovery of surface height in shape-from-shading. We commence from an initial field of surface normals which are constrained to fall on the Lambertian reflectance cone and to point in the direction of the local Canny edge gradient. We aim to find a path through this field of...

A Shape-from-shading Framework for Satisfying Data-closeness and Structure-preserving Smoothness Constraints

A key problem in shape-from-shading is how to simultaneously satisfy data-closeness and regularisation (such as surface smoothness) constraints. This paper makes two contributions towards solving this problem. The first is to describe a smoothness constraint which preserves surface structure by adaptively smoothing according to the intensity gradient magnitude. The second is to derive a framewo...

Such techniques ar...
