A comprehensive evaluation of lexical reading in Italian developmental dyslexics

چکیده
Italian developmental dyslexic readers show a striking length effect and have been hypothesised to rely mostly on nonlexical reading. Our experiments tested this hypothesis by assessing whether or not the defi cit underlying dyslexia is specifi c to lexical reading. The effects of lexicality, word frequency and length were investigated in the same group of children in four separate experiments. Although dyslexics were slower and less accurate than skilled readers and had large length effects, they showed lexicality and word frequency effects in both reading aloud and lexical decision. In a crossexperiment comparison, we show that a single global factor explains a large proportion of the difference in reading performance between dyslexic and skilled readers. This factor may indicate a defi cit at a prelexical level of analysis. Lexical activation seemed spared in the dyslexic children based on the effects of lexicality and frequency. These fi ndings contrast the hypothesis that Italian dyslexics primarily engage in nonlexical reading.

Long-term reading and spelling outcome in Italian adolescents with a history of specific language impairment.
Specific language impairment (SLI) diagnosed in the pre-school years is frequently associated with reading and writing difficulties at school age. The nature of this relationship is unclear, despite the availability of a large number of studies, mostly on English speaking children. Phonological processing deficits have been considered the prominent cause of both difficulties. However recent fin...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate processes of lexical access, selection and early semantic access in young native Hungarian students as well as in dyslexics compensating successfully for their reading problems of developmental origin. The present study made use of the well-known lexical decision paradigm in which event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by words, number-words and ps...
متن کاملAuditory temporal processing and lexical/nonlexical reading in developmental dyslexics.
Relationships between lexical/nonlexical reading and auditory temporal processing were examined. Poor nonlexical readers (poor nonword readers, phonologic dyslexics) had difficulty across tone tasks irrespective of speed of presentation or mode of recall. Poor lexical readers (poor irregular word readers, surface dyslexics) had difficulty recalling tones in a sequence only when they were presen...
متن کاملVarieties of developmental dyslexia.
This paper reviews and evaluates the evidence for the existence of distinct varieties of developmental dyslexia, analogous to those found in the acquired dyslexic population. Models of the normal adult reading process and of the development of reading in children are used to provide a framework for considering the issues. Data from a large-sample study of the reading patterns of developmental d...
متن کاملSpelling impairments in Spanish dyslexic adults
Spelling deficits have repeatedly been observed in children with dyslexia. However, the few studies addressing this issue in dyslexic adults have reported contradictory results. We investigated whether Spanish dyslexics show spelling deficits in adulthood and which components of the writing production process might be impaired in developmental dyslexia. In order to evaluate the involvement of t...
