چکیده

GP studied preferences over menus (sets) of alternatives. This implicitly means that the decision maker chooses a menu and then selects an alternative from the menu. Consider a compact metric space Z of prizes. Let ∆ be the set of all Borel probability measures over Z. An element in ∆ represents an alternative for (implicit) choice. Assume that ∆ is endowed with the topology of weak convergence. Let A be the set of all compact (with respect to the topology of weak convergence) subsets in ∆. A is endowed with the topology induced by the Hausdorff metric. An element in A represents the menu of alternatives. The primitive of their model is a binary relation % over A . GP considered the following axioms (GP axioms) over %.

The role of Self-efficacy, Time Perspective, and Conformity Pressure in Temptation for Smoking and Substance Use among University Students

Identifying factors which contribute to young adults’ temptation for substance use is a significant step toward prevention of this social harm. The current study aimed to examine the role of a set of personal and social factors and their interaction in shaping temptation for cigarette smoking and substance use among university students. Self-Signaling and the Costs and Benefits of Temptation in Consumer Choice

The literature on consumer self-control emphasizes that temptation is costly and focuses on the costs of resisting temptation. We propose that temptation can entail not only costs but also benefits. These arise from self-signaling effects of how consumers handle tempting choice options. Succumbing to temptation is a (costly) self-signal of weak willpower, whereas resisting temptation is a (bene...

Optimal Commitment and the Type of Temptation

The main purpose of this paper is to describe how different assumptions about temptation and self-control affect the optimal borrowing and saving contracts in a simple stochastic income setting. I find that the optimal savings plan when temptation is myopic consists of a mandatory minimum level of savings, while the optimal plan for farsighted temptation can have several fully restrictive manda...

Temptation, Self-Control, and Competitive Nonlinear Pricing

Standard pricing theories consider consumers without temptation. With temptation and costly self-control, consumers dislike choice sets with tempting alternatives. We study firms’ strategy against such consumers, using Gul–Pesendorfer preferences and a game where firms compete by offering menus. JEL Classification: D43, L13, L15

Temptation and Self-Control: Some Evidence from the Consumer Expenditure Survey∗

This paper empirically estimates a balanced-growth consistent, dynamic, structural model of intertemporal consumption and asset pricing that allows for, but does not assume, the GulPesendorfer preferences of temptation and self-control, using synthetic panel data constructed from the Consumer Expenditure Survey. One novelty of our model is that the cross-sectional distribution of wealth-consump...
