SHRIMP U–Pb dating of diagenetic xenotime in the Stirling Range Formation, Western Australia: 1.8 billion year minimum age for the Stirling biota

چکیده
The Stirling Range Formation in southwestern Australia contains discoidal fossils previously linked to the late Neoproterozoic Ediacaran biota and possible trace fossils interpreted to have been made by vermiform, mucus-producing, motile organisms. The age of the sedimentary succession was recently reported to be between 2.0 and 1.2 billion years old, based on U–Pb geochronology of detrital zircon and metamorphic monazite, respectively. Ion microprobe U–Pb geochronology of xenotime in sandstones from the same succession produces three sets of radiometric data. Detrital xenotime grains yield ages between 3120 and 2100 Ma (consistent with the detrital zircon data; between 3460 and 1960 Ma), whereas compositionally distinct xenotime overgrowths yield a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 1800 ± 14 Ma for the oldest population and 1662 ± 15 Ma for a younger population. The new data show that the Stirling Range Formation is more than 1.8 billion years old, some 600 million years older than the minimum defined by metamorphic monazite. The results show that the various megascopic fossils reported in the succession are between 2.0 and 1.8 billion years old, emphasizing their already controversial nature. If our interpretation of the fossils is correct, then motile multicellular (or possibly syncytial) organisms had already emerged in the late Paleoproterozoic, simultaneously with the first large alga-like multicellular eukaryotes. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. The Sungun copper porphyry deposit is hosted by a Tertiary magmatic complex in the Azarbayjan province , northwestern Iran. The Sungan mine in its southern and eastern parts is limited by early Miocene volcanic and by Late Cretaceous limestone rocks in northern and eastern parts respectively . The Sungun deposit is associated with a suite of porphyritic granitoids and late dikes intrudi...
متن کاملDiscoidal impressions and trace-like fossils more than 1200 million years old.
The Stirling Range Formation of southwestern Australia contains discoidal impressions and trace-like fossils in tidal sandstones. The various disks have previously been linked to the Ediacaran biota, younger than 600 million years old. From this unit, we report U-Th-Pb geochronology of detrital zircon and monazite, as well as low-grade metamorphic monazite, constraining the depositional age to ...

U-Pb ages obtained on zircons from the investigated migmatites place new constraints on the evolution of the crustal rocks in the Takab area. SHRIMP U-Pb dating of inherited zircon in the melanosome parts of mafic migmatites from the Takab complex gives a discordant age with an upper intercept of 2961±72 Ma (MSWD=0.5) and a lower intercept of 24.2±5.7 Ma (MSWD=1.7). In the concordia diagram, th...
متن کاملAn Investigation on the Effects of Gas Pressure Drop in Heat Exchangers on Dynamics of a Free Piston Stirling Engine
This paper is devoted to study the effects of pressure drop in heat exchangers on the dynamics of a free piston Stirling engine. First, the dynamic equations governing the pistons as well as the gas pressure equations for hot and cold spaces of the engine are extracted. Then, by substituting the obtained pressure equations into the dynamic relationships the final nonlinear dynamic equations gov...
