The effects of early stress on life-time strategies of behaviour and coping in chickens (Gallus gallus)

چکیده
Stress is often an important consideration for animal welfare. A number of factors can contribute to stress in domestic animals, most notably thoseused in food production. We investigated the effects and heritability of stress in domestic chickens (Gallus gallus). Using a spatial learningparadigm, we tested an early social isolation-stressed group and their offspring against unstressed controls, to determine if this cognitive functionwas negatively affected by stress. In the parental generation, we found that across sessions control birds improved in performance, indicating a learning trend. Stressed birds showed no difference across sessions, indicating a lack of learning. No effects of the parental treatment were foundin the offspring of stress and control birds. Social isolation stress was found to affect spatial memory learning, however, we did not find evidencethat the parental stress influenced the spatial abilities of the next generation despite changes in other behaviours.ISBN__________________________________________________ISRN__________________________________________________ Serietitel och serienummerISSN Title of series, numberingLITH-IFM-A-Ex—11/2438-SE

Domestication and ontogeny effects on the stress response in young chickens (Gallus gallus)
Domestication is thought to increase stress tolerance. The connection between stressor exposure, glucocorticoids and behavioural responses has been studied in adults, where domestication effects are evident. Early stress exposure may induce detrimental effects both in short-and long term. Previous research has reported a lack of glucocorticoid response in newly hatched chickens (Gallus gallus),...

متن کاملLong-Term and Transgenerational Effects of Stress Experienced during Different Life Phases in Chickens (Gallus gallus)
Stress in animals causes not only immediate reactions, but may affect their biology for long periods, even across generations. Particular interest has been paid to perinatal stress, but also adolescence has been shown to be a sensitive period in mammals. So far, no systematic study has been performed of the relative importance of stress encountered during different life phases. In this study, g...

Background: Histone deacetylation plays an essential role in transcriptional regulation of cell cycle progression and other evolutionary processes. Several results confirm the importance of the latest found HDAC11 gene to deacetylate histone core in neurons and their supportive cells in developing the vertebrate Central Nervous System (CNS). Objectives: This study investigates the HDAC11 pote...
متن کاملWhat are the similarities between stress, sudden cardiac death in Gallus gallus and sudden unexpected death in people with epilepsy.
Individuals with epilepsy are at higher risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP), responsible for 7.5% to 17% of all deaths in epilepsy. Many factors are current associated with SUDEP and possible effect of stress and cardiac arrhythmia are still not clear. Sudden death syndrome (SDS) in chickens is a disease characterized by an acute death of well-nourished and seeming healthy Gallu...
