چکیده

HAMDAN O, KHALI AZIZ H & ABD RAHMAN K. 2011. Remotely sensed L-band SAR data for tropical forest biomass estimation. Several attempts have been made to obtain forest stand parameters such as stand volume, stand density, basal area, biomass and carbon (C) stocks from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. However the relationship between these parameters and radar backscatter has been a challenging issue since the last several years. In this study, L-band ALOS PALSAR satellite image with a spatial resolution of 12.0 m was utilised to identify the relationship between radar backscatter and aboveground biomass of tropical forest stands. Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) which has about 420 ha of forest area was selected as the study area. Field survey was conducted in which 30 plots (50 × 50 m, 0.25 ha each) were established and all trees with diameters at breast height (dbh) of 5 cm and above were inventoried. The calculated plotbased biomass was correlated to the pixels of SAR backscatter corresponding to the plot size on the ground. The correlation function was used to determine stand biomass of the whole study area. Results showed that dense forest was sensitive to the backscatter on horizontal–vertical polarised (HV) image compared with horizontal–horizontal polarised (HH) image. It was also found that the L-band SAR backscatter had good capability to estimate aboveground biomass in mature stands of tropical forest.

Estimating Texture Independently of Tone in Simulated Images of Forest Canopies

Tone and texture are two fundamental characteristics of remotely sensed images. Current research on the remote sensing of tropical forest biomass uses the tone (i.e., backscatter) of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images as this is related directly to biomass (albeit up to the backscatter/biomass asymptote). As a tropical forest canopy ages so its unevenness increases, progressing from smooth t...

Improvement of Biomass Estimation in Forest Areas based on Polarimetric Parameters Optimization of SETHI airborne Data using Particle Swarm Optimization Method

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...

Forest above Ground Biomass Estimation and Forest/non-forest Classification for Odisha, India, Using L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (sar) Data

Tropical forests contribute to approximately 40% of the total carbon found in terrestrial biomass. In this context, forest/non-forest classification and estimation of forest above ground biomass over tropical regions are very important and relevant in understanding the contribution of tropical forests in global biogeochemical cycles, especially in terms of carbon pools and fluxes. Information o...

Decrease of L-band SAR backscatter with biomass of dense forests

Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is one of the most promising remote sensors to map forest carbon. The unique spaceborne and longwavelength SAR data currently available are L-band data, but their relationship with forest biomass is still controversial, particularly for high biomass values. While many studies assume a complete loss of sensitivity above a saturation point, typically around 100 t.ha...

A Comparative Study of SVM and RF Methods for Classification of Alteration Zones Using Remotely Sensed Data

Identification and mapping of the significant alterations are the main objectives of the exploration geochemical surveys. The field study is time-consuming and costly to produce the classified maps. Therefore, the processing of remotely sensed data, which provide timely and multi-band (multi-layer) data, can be substituted for the field study. In this study, the ASTER imagery is used for altera...
