Possible Commercial Method of Freezing Chicken Semen
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Primary breeders are currently faced with the same problem plaguing most animal industries, rising production costs. Labor, feed and energy costs are forcing primary breeders to consider more economical ways of maintaining gene pools. One way to reduce such costs is with the use of frozen semen. With frozen semen available from superior sires, primary breeders will have the tool to (a) increase genetic advancement per generation,' (b) gain a more precise evaluation of genetic improvement, (c) allow more efficient use of sires, and (d) distribute genetic material worldwide. Further benefits from needing fewer breeder males and obtaining better quality offspring from the use of superior sires will more than pay for the cost of a semen preservation program. Interest in the preservation of chicken semen began in 1941 when Shaffner, working at the University of Maryland, obtained progeny from hens inseminated with frozen Semen. From 1948 until the late 1960's considerable reserach was devoted to the problem of preserving poultry semen. This work was reviewed by Lorenz in 1969 and later by Lake (1978). The purpose of this paper is to discuss a commercial method of freezing chicken semen, henceforth referred to as the Beltsville method, and discuss those factors which most influence the fertility of frozen semen.

Advances in avian semen cryopreservation
Semen cryopreservation in domestic birds has been studied extensively in the past fifty years. However, efficient methods to freeze semen of chicken of different breeds have emerged only in the last decade of the 20 century. Methods using cryoprotectants Glycerol, Dimethyl Acetamide and Dimethyl sulfoxide, slow or rapid freezing-thawing procedures, pellets or ampoules or straws packaging have b...
متن کاملCryopreservation of semen from genetic resource chicken lines
The objective of the present study was to establish an effective semen freezing procedure to set up a cryobank for chicken breeds and genetic lines of special interest. The fowls used in the experiments originated from White Leghorn lines maintained as conservation flocks. In this study, different protocols were evaluated in terms of differences in the fertilization success. 1 A) Comparison of ...

Cryopreservation of spermatozoa plays a significant role in reproductive medicine and fertility preservation. Chicken egg yolk is used as an extender in cryopreservation of human spermatozoa using glycerol egg yolk citrate (GEYC) buffered medium. Even though 50% survival of spermatozoa is generally achieved with this method, the risk of high levels of endotoxins and transmission pathogens from ...
متن کاملSperm number required for maximum fertility of chicken semen processed for freezing.
Two independent experiments were designed to determine the number of sperm needed for maximum fertility of chicken semen processed for freezing. Pooled semen samples were either diluted 1:2 or 1:5 with the Beltsville Poultry Semen Extender, while undiluted samples served as controls. Samples were then subsequently processed (pre-freeze), according to the Beltsville method, as if they were going...
