Culture-orientated Product Design

چکیده
There is little in-depth research that can assist designers to use culture as a catalyst for designing innovative product within Botswana’s context. This is supported by evidence from the literature which indicate that from an African perspective, there is no solid theoretical framework which can assist designers to consciously integrate users’ culture in designing products. This challenges designers to gain a deeper understanding of users’ culture and find strategies on how they can use culture as a resource in product development and promote culture-orientated product innovation. The paper discusses an experimental design study conducted at the University of Botswana which challenged participants to transform socio-cultural factors into product features. The paper concludes by discussing a culture-orientated design

Interculturality and Design: Is Culture a Block or an Encouragement to Innovation?
The impact of interculturality on design has not yet been investigated (interculturality being the field dedicated to the study of relations between cultures). We formulate the following hypothesis: this discipline can introduce new elements of reflection on the relation of man/goods and culture/innovation. Although research in interculturality is hardly orientated towards the direction of desi...
متن کاملConsuming use orientated product service systems: a Consumer Culture Theory perspective Catulli,
Research suggests that product service systems (PSS) may usefully form part of the mix of innovations necessary to move society toward more sustainable futures. However, PSS implementation rates are disappointingly low and an implementation gap has emerged. Drawing on consumer culture theory (CCT), this paper provides insights to help resolve this issue in business to consumer markets. Since co...
متن کاملEducating the whole: course structure for a human-centred approach in product design engineering
In Glasgow, an inter-institutional approach to teaching design engineering students is fostered through the particular nature of the teaching and learning environment, the management of students, the structure of the projects, and the content and delivery of the technical and nontechnical elements. These engineering students are encouraged to work in teams, to take a user-orientated approach, t...
متن کاملA Project-Orientated Training Concept to Prepare Students for Systems Engineering Activities
Systems Engineering plays a key role during industrial product development of complex technical systems. The need for systems engineers in industry is growing. But there is a gap between the industrial need and the academic education. Normally the academic education is focused on the domain specific design, implementation and testing of technical systems. Necessary systems engineering expertise...
متن کاملA checkpoint-orientated model to simulate unconstrained proliferation of cells
In this paper we propose a new computational model of cell cycle to study the dynamics of cells population in 2D monolayer culture. Whereas most of the models are phase-orientated our model deals with a checkpoint orientated paradigm and uses the phase orientation as an output to provide the biologists with a relevant view of the simulation result. Through this paper we will present the generic...
