چکیده

Bivalves are the most common macrofauna present in marine sequences spanning the end-Triassic mass extinction and document the initial ecological response to the crisis. In the west-Tethyan Kössen Basin, marine bivalves occur within distinctive low diversity episodic shell beds at the time of initial crisis and d13C minimum, and continue for 1 m (,,20 kyr) upward into the peak extinction phase devoid of macrofauna. The paleoecology, shell mineralogy, and paleobiogeographic context of these well-preserved bivalves suggest they are part of eurytopic opportunistic paleocommunities flourishing in a time of crisis and are consistent with some, but not all, of the paleoenvironmental scenarios hypothesized in the context of synchronous volcanic activity. The best model-to-data fit is found for an ocean acidification scenario, which predicts an increased extinction risk for taxa with thick calcareous skeletons and aragonite mineralogy due to reduced CaCO3 saturation of seawater for a period of ,20 kyr. Other kill mechanisms, such as climatic change and reduced salinity in nearshore marine settings, are less well supported but not fully incompatible with our data and might have acted in concert with ocean acidification.

Tectonic Setting of Metabasites of the Neo-Tethyan Oceanic Remains in Sanandaj-Sirjan Structural Zone West of Isfahan, Central Iran

The study area is located in the western portion of Isfahan, in Shahrekord-Dehsard Terrene. This area is part of the Sanandaj- Sirjan structural Zone. In this area, metamorphosed igneous outcrops contain greenschist and metabasite rocks. These rocks have metamorphed into greenschist facies and belong to the Triassic-Jurassic age. The etabasite is mainly composed of plagioclase, amphibole, epido...

Dynamic anoxic ferruginous conditions during the end-Permian mass extinction and recovery

The end-Permian mass extinction, ∼252 million years ago, is notable for a complex recovery period of ∼5 Myr. Widespread euxinic (anoxic and sulfidic) oceanic conditions have been proposed as both extinction mechanism and explanation for the protracted recovery period, yet the vertical distribution of anoxia in the water column and its temporal dynamics through this time period are poorly constr...

40Ar/39Ar dates from the West Siberian Basin: Siberian flood basalt province doubled.

Widespread basaltic volcanism occurred in the region of the West Siberian Basin in central Russia during Permo-Triassic times. New 40Ar/39Ar age determinations on plagioclase grains from deep boreholes in the basin reveal that the basalts were erupted 249.4 +/- 0.5 million years ago. This is synchronous with the bulk of the Siberian Traps, erupted further east on the Siberian Platform. The age ...

A gigantic nothosaur (Reptilia: Sauropterygia) from the Middle Triassic of SW China and its implication for the Triassic biotic recovery

The presence of gigantic apex predators in the eastern Panthalassic and western Tethyan oceans suggests that complex ecosystems in the sea had become re-established in these regions at least by the early Middle Triassic, after the Permian-Triassic mass extinction (PTME). However, it is not clear whether oceanic ecosystem recovery from the PTME was globally synchronous because of the apparent la...

Boreal earliest Triassic biotas elucidate globally depauperate hard substrate communities after the end-Permian mass extinction

The end-Permian mass extinction constituted the most devastating biotic crisis of the Phanerozoic. Its aftermath was characterized by harsh marine conditions incorporating volcanically induced oceanic warming, widespread anoxia and acidification. Bio-productivity accordingly experienced marked fluctuations. In particular, low palaeolatitude hard substrate communities from shallow seas fringing ...
