Between Laws and Models: Some Philosophical Morals of Lagrangian Mechanics

چکیده

I extract some philosophical morals from some aspects of Lagrangian mechanics. (A companion paper will present similar morals from Hamiltonian mechanics and Hamilton-Jacobi theory.) One main moral concerns methodology: Lagrangian mechanics provides a level of description of phenomena which has been largely ignored by philosophers, since it falls between their accustomed levels—“laws of nature” and “models”. Another main moral concerns ontology: the ontology of Lagrangian mechanics is both more subtle and more problematic than philosophers often realize. The treatment of Lagrangian mechanics provides an introduction to the subject for philosophers, and is technically elementary. In particular, it is confined to systems with a finite number of degrees of freedom, and for the most part eschews modern geometry. Newton’s fundamental discovery, the one which he considered necessary to keep secret and published only in the form of an anagram, consists of the following: Data aequatione quotcunque fluentes quantitae involvente fluxiones invenire et vice versa. In contemporary mathematical language, this means: “It is useful to solve differential equations”. V. Finite Element Solutions of Cantilever and Fixed Actuator Beams Using Augmented Lagrangian Methods

In this paper we develop a numerical procedure using finite element and augmented Lagrangian meth-ods that simulates electro-mechanical pull-in states of both cantilever and fixed beams in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) switches. We devise the augmented Lagrangian methods for the well-known Euler-Bernoulli beam equation which also takes into consideration of the fringing effect of electr...

Stress Transfer Modeling in CNT Reinforced Composites using Continuum Mechanics (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Because of the substantial difference in stiffness between matrix and nanotube in CNT composite, the stress transfer between them controls their mechanical properties. This paper investigates the said issue, analytically and numerically, in axial load using representative volume element (RVE). The analytical model was established based on the modified Cox’s shear lag model with the use of some ...

Particles and fields in fluid turbulence

The understanding of fluid turbulence has considerably progressed in recent years. The application of the methods of statistical mechanics to the description of the motion of fluid particles, i.e., to the Lagrangian dynamics, has led to a new quantitative theory of intermittency in turbulent transport. The first analytical description of anomalous scaling laws in turbulence has been obtained. T...

Dynamic Fracture Analysis Using an Uncoupled Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian Finite Element Formulation

This paper deals with the implementation of an efficient Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) formulation for the three dimensional finite element modeling of mode I self-similar dynamic fracture process. Contrary to the remeshing technique, the presented algorithm can continuously advance the crack with the one mesh topology. The uncoupled approach is employed to treat the equations. So, each t...

Philosophical Ethics Adapted from Thomas White, "ethics," Chapter 1, Business Ethics: a Philosophical Reader (new York: Macmillan Publishing, 1993)

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that explores the nature of moral virtue and evaluates human actions. Philosophical ethics differs from legal, religious, cultural and personal approaches to ethics by seeking to conduct the study of morality through a rational, secular outlook that is grounded in notions of human happiness or well-being. A major advantage of a philosophical approach to ethics...
