Evolvability Via Modularity-Induced Mutational Focussing

چکیده
This work postulates a mechanism by which random genotypic variation is directed towards favourable phenotypic variation. Evolvability is a poorly understood concept at present; it is unclear precisely how the genotype-phenotype map aligns random genotypic mutation with favourable phenotypic variation. By static analysis of the distribution of functionality within the genotype, an emergent bias in the representation of the adapted and maladapted is shown. This bias is facilitated by a form of reuse modularity, and it serves to direct phenotypic variation to where there is selective opportunity.

Protein Structural Modularity and Robustness Are Associated with Evolvability
Theory suggests that biological modularity and robustness allow for maintenance of fitness under mutational change, and when this change is adaptive, for evolvability. Empirical demonstrations that these traits promote evolvability in nature remain scant however. This is in part because modularity, robustness, and evolvability are difficult to define and measure in real biological systems. Here...
متن کاملStructural Robustness Confers Evolvability in Proteins
Theory suggests that biological robustness allows for the maintenance of fitness in the face of mutational change, and to the extent that this mutational change translates to heritable phenotypic change, that biological robustness allows for evolvability. However, empirical demonstrations that robustness promotes evolvability remain scant. This is in part due to the difficulty of defining and m...
متن کاملIs evolvability involved in the origin of modular variation?
Lipson et al. (2002) presented an elegant linear algebraic formalism to define and study the evolution of modularity in an artificial evolving system. They employed simulation data to support their suggestion that modularity arises spontaneously in temporally fluctuating systems in response to selection for enhanced evolvability. We show analytically and by simulation that their correlate of mo...
متن کاملModular Interdependency in Complex Dynamical Systems
Herbert A. Simon's characterization of modularity in dynamical systems describes subsystems as having dynamics that are approximately independent of those of other subsystems (in the short term). This fits with the general intuition that modules must, by definition, be approximately independent. In the evolution of complex systems, such modularity may enable subsystems to be modified and adapte...
متن کاملPlasticity, evolvability, and modularity in RNA.
RNA folding from sequences into secondary structures is a simple yet powerful, biophysically grounded model of a genotype-phenotype map in which concepts like plasticity, evolvability, epistasis, and modularity can not only be precisely defined and statistically measured but also reveal simultaneous and profoundly non-independent effects of natural selection. Molecular plasticity is viewed here...
