“a Prospective Audit of Post Operative Complications of Construction of Loop Ileostomy”

OBJECTIVES: To determine the morbidity associated with construction of loop ileostomy in a teaching hospital. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This prospective cohort study was carried out at Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad, from September 2005 to August 2007. An analysis was performed of all the patients who underwent loop ileostomies in our emergency wing. Various complications were noted during postoperative hospital stay and subsequently during follow-up till stoma is closed electively. Data being collected prospectively on a proforma after a written consent and is later transfer to SPSS 16.0 for analysis. RESULTS: One hundred six patient, 79 (74.52%) males and 27 (25.47%) females with a mean age of 25 years (average 15-60 year) had loop ileostomies constructed during the study period. Twelve patients (11.37%) had complications arising from ileostomies construction, including 6 (5.6%) suffers parastomal irritation / infection / excoriation of skin. Two patients (1.83%) had stomal retraction, two patients (1.83%) had small bowel obstruction and one patient each had ileostomy prolapse (0.93%) and ileostomy diarrhea (0.93%). Two patients with ileostomy retraction and one patient with small bowl obstruction required surgical intervention all other complications improved with conservation management. CONCLUSION: We conclude that loop ileostomy is associated with low morbidity.
