چکیده

Phylogenetic analysis using DNA sequence data from two nuclear genes was undertaken to investigate phylogeographic structure within the widespread leafmining pest Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard). Parsimony analysis of 171 bp from b-tubulin (including an intron) and 921 bp from elongation factor-1a conÞrms previous Þndings from mitochondrial sequence data of deep phylogeographic structure indicative of cryptic species within L. huidobrensis. We resurrect the name L. langei Frick for the North American cryptic species and restrict the name L. huidobrensis to the South andCentral American cryptic species. Results fromnuclear genes also conÞrmprevious results suggesting that recent invasions of this leafminer in many areas of the world are due to the spread of L. huidobrensis from South or Central America.

Mitochondrial Phylogeography of the Vegetable Pest Liriomyza trifolii (Diptera: Agromyzidae): Diverged Clades and Invasive Populations

The leafmining ßyLiriomyza trifolii (Burgess) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) is an important pest of vegetable and cut-ßower crops. In recent decades, this species has become invasive, spreading from the Americas to the rest of the world. Despite substantial losses caused by Liriomyza leafminers, the systematics of these ßies has remained poorly understood because of their small size and morphological ...

Interspecific and intraspecific differences in two Liriomyza leafminer species in California

In recent years, the pest status of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) and L. huidobrensis (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) has changed in California, as well as other areas of the world. In California, L. huidobrensis has become the predominant Liriomyza species in valleys along the central coast, while L. trifolii remains the predominant species in southern California. To investigate possible rea...

Variation in Morphological Characters of Two Invasive Leafminers, Liriomyza huidobrensis and L. sativae, across a Tropical Elevation Gradient

Changes in morphological traits along elevation and latitudinal gradients in ectotherms are often interpreted in terms of the temperature-size rule, which states that the body size of organisms increases under low temperatures, and is therefore expected to increase with elevation and latitude. However other factors like host plant might contribute to spatial patterns in size as well, particular...

Effects of foliar surfactants on host plant selection behavior of Liriomyza huidobrensis (Diptera: Agromyzidae).

The pea leafminer, Liriomyza huidobrensis (Diptera: Agromyzidae), is a highly polyphagous insect pest of global distribution. L. huidobrensis feeds and lays its eggs on leaf tissue and reduces crop marketability because of stippling and mining damage. In field insecticide trials, it was observed that stippling was reduced on plants treated with surfactant alone. The objectives of this study wer...

Molecular Survey for the Invasive Leafminer Pest Liriomyza huidobrensis (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in California Uncovers Only the Native Pest Liriomyza langei.

Liriomyza huidobrensis (Blanchard) is a highly destructive invasive leafminer pest currently causing extensive damage to vegetable and horticultural crops around the world. Liriomyza langei Frick is a leafminer pest native to California that cannot currently be morphologically distinguished from L. huidobrensis. We used a DNA-barcoding approach, a published PCR-RFLP method, and a new multiplex ...
