3D Atlas of Neurological Disorders
نویسنده
چکیده
The objective of the 3D Atlas, according to the Introduction, is to address neurological disorders resulting from brain damage. A bold assertion. However, there is justification for such a claim as the primary author, Wieslaw Nowinski has produced 35 such brain and neurological atlases. He has a significant number of publications to his name and has received awards and honours for his research. He definitely has pedigree. The other credits go to Beng Choon Chua, project leader with experience in all aspects of system engineering, and Su Hnin Wut Yi, software engineer involved with design and development of object-oriented programming. All three are associated with A*STAR (the Agency for Science, Technology and Research), a Singapore public sector agency involved in research to promote development of innovative technology. The Atlas is designed for use by medical students, health care generalists, and specialists such as neurosurgeons. This is quite a broad range. It is an advantage in one sense (wider audience), but a disadvantage in another, in that it could be too demanding for students but not up to date, specific or detailed enough for specialists. The Disclaimer notes that medical knowledge is ever changing. Therefore, the authors are careful to mention the possibility of error. They recognise that any publication in this area may quickly be superseded. This is true for the technology as well as the pathologies. To mitigate against this, the anatomical and pathological information is solid rather than detailing latest research. It is hard to predict how soon the technology will be superseded, but as these authors are on the cutting edge of its development, it is likely they will produce the next version.

Development of an Anaglyph Anatomical Atlas of Rabbit as a New Generation of Printable 3D Anatomical Atlases
Introduction: To improve anatomical atlases, we tried to create a printable 3D atlas of rabbit's anatomy based on the Anaglyph. Methods: In this study, twenty white rabbits euthanized and dissected. All 3D images were reconstructed by means of "stereo photo maker (SPM®)" software. Results: By this atlas, users can easily understand nomenclature, the topography and, certainly, the transpo...
متن کاملA Comprehensive Atlas of E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Mutations in Neurological Disorders
Protein ubiquitination is a posttranslational modification that plays an integral part in mediating diverse cellular functions. The process of protein ubiquitination requires an enzymatic cascade that consists of a ubiquitin activating enzyme (E1), ubiquitin conjugating enzyme (E2) and an E3 ubiquitin ligase (E3). There are an estimated 600-700 E3 ligase genes representing ~5% of the human geno...
متن کاملLesions in deep gray nuclei after severe traumatic brain injury predict neurologic outcome
PURPOSE This study evaluates the correlation between injuries to deep gray matter nuclei, as quantitated by lesions in these nuclei on MR T2 Fast Spin Echo (T2 FSE) images, with 6-month neurological outcome after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). MATERIALS AND METHODS Ninety-five patients (80 males, mean age = 36.7y) with severe TBI were prospectively enrolled. All patients underwent a MR ...
متن کاملAtlas-based automated positioning of outer volume suppression slices in short-echo time 3D MR spectroscopic imaging of the human brain.
Spatial suppression of peripheral lipid-containing regions in volumetric MR spectroscopic imaging of the human brain requires placing large numbers of outer volume suppression (OVS) slices, which is time-consuming, prone to operator error and may introduce subject-dependent variability in volume coverage. We developed a novel, computationally efficient atlas-based approach for automated positio...
متن کاملComputed Three-Dimensional Atlas of Subthalamic Nucleus and Its Adjacent Structures for Deep Brain Stimulation in Parkinson's Disease
Background. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) is one of the standard surgical treatments for advanced Parkinson's disease. However, it has been difficult to accurately localize the stimulated contact area of the electrode in the subthalamic nucleus and its adjacent structures using a two-dimensional atlas. The goal of this study is to verify the real and detailed loc...
