Microphase Segregation of Diblock Copolymers Studied by the Self-Consistent Field Theory of Scheutjens and Fleer

چکیده
We used the self-consistent field (SCF) formalism of Scheutjens and Fleer (SF-SCF) to complement existing theoretical investigations on the phase behavior of block copolymer melts. This method employs the freely jointed chain (FJC) model for finite chain length and systematic differences exist compared to the classical SCF predictions. We focus on the critical and hexagonal (HEX) to lamellar (LAM) phase transition region at intermediate and strong segregations. Chain length (N) dependence of the critical point (χcr) was found to be χcr N = 10.495(1 + 4/N). The characteristic spacing (D) of LAM was found as D = 4/3 √ N at the critical conditions. We present SF-SCF predictions for the phases single gyroid (SG), double gyroid (DG) and hexagonally perforated lamellar (HPL), in the region where HEX and LAM compete. At χN = 30, N = 300; we found SG and HPL were metastable with respect to LAM or HEX, DG was stable in a narrow region of the asymmetry ratio. In contrast to the latest predictions, at strong segregation χN = 120, DG was found to be metastable. From the structural evolution of HPL, we speculate that this may be an intermediate phase that allows the system to go through various connectivity regimes between minority and majority blocks.

Self-consistent field theory for the distal ordering of adsorbed polymer: comparison with the Scheutjens–Fleer model
In a previous article [E.M. Blokhuis, K.I. Skau, and J.B. Avalos, J. Chem. Phys. 119, 3483 (2003)], a self-consistent field formalism was derived for weakly adsorbing polymers, valid for any chain length. It was shown that the presence of a solid wall induces an ordering of the polymers on the scale of the radius of gyration far away from the surface (the distal region). These oscillations in t...

The self-assembled morphologies of amphiphilic ABC star triblock copolymers consisting of hydrophilic A blocks and hydrophobic B and C blocks and the blends with their counterpart linear AB diblock copolymers in solution are investigated by 2D real-space implementation of self-consistent field theory (SCFT) simulation. The star triblock copolymers self-assemble in solution to form various micel...
متن کاملOn the Derivation of a Density Functional Theory for Microphase Separation of Diblock Copolymers
We consider here the problem of phase separation in copolymer melts. The Ohta-Kawasaki density functional theory gives rise to a nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-like functional, promoting the use of ansatz-free mathematical tools for the investigation of minimizers. In this article we re-derive this functional as an offspring of the self-consistent mean field theory, connecting all parameters to the fun...
متن کاملMicrophase segregation in molten randomly grafted copolymers
We study microphase ordering of molten randomly grafted copolymers ~RGCs! by using a mean field theory and the replica method to calculate the quenched average. Our results illustrate that in the weak segregation limit ~WSI!, the optimal wave vector q* of the lamellar phase formed by molten RGCs, has a temperature dependence different from either linear random copolymers ~LRCs! or diblock copol...

The authors present a generalized theory of microphase separation for charged-neutral diblock copolymer melt. The stability limit of the disordered phase for salt-free melt has been calculated using random phase approximation (RPA) and self-consistent-field theory (SCFT). Explicit analytical free energy expressions for different classical ordered microstructures (lamellar, cylinder, and sphere)...
