چکیده

We monitored the riparian bird community for two years following the 1995 Vision Fire in the Point Reyes National Seashore (PRNS), Marin County, Cal i for nia. We compare bird and vegetation data on burned and unburned sites within PRNS and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Bird abundance, as indexed by fi xed-radius point counts, was higher for sev er al shrub-nesting species at burned sites than at un burned sites. For some tree nest ing spe cies, however, abundance was lower at burned sites. A comparison of vegetation data collected at the bird survey points showed that burned riparian had sig nifi cant ly less tree cover and had greater shrub and herb cover than unburned sites. Re pro duc tive success and sur viv al may serve as better in di ca tors of habitat quality and pop u la tion health than abun dance of individuals. There fore, we lo cat ed and monitored nests of the Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) – a spe cies whose abun dance was greater in the re cent ly burned riparian hab i tat – to es ti mate nest survival at one burned site (Muddy Hol low) and two unburned sites (Lagunitas and Olema Creeks). We then built population growth rate models ( ) to de ter mine the rela tive “source-sink” status of this species by site, to index local pop u la tion health. Nest sur viv al was sig nifi cant ly higher on the burned site than the un burned sites, and the values suggested that the burned site was a population source while the unburned sites were sinks. The fact that abun dance and re pro duc tive success were higher at the burned site is intriguing because it suggests that high Song Spar row abundance can be used to infer habitat quality in coastal riparian areas, but more rigorous studies are need ed. Our results provide evidence that fi res in riparian zones may benefi t breeding populations of songbirds (given the right conditions and timing) and high light the utility of mon i tor ing programs to land man ag ers.

Effects of prescribed fire on a Sierra Nevada (California, USA) stream and its riparian zone

Concerns about the effects of fire on ecologically sensitive habitats have limited the use of prescribed fire in the management of forest riparian areas. Using a beyond-BACI (Before-After-Control-Impact) experimental design, we examined the effects of a 26-ha prescribed fire that burned upland and riparian areas of a first-order watershed, and compared this to five unburned sites examined from ...

Autumn Landbird Communities in the Boise Foothills and Owyhee Mountains of Southwestern Idaho

Identifying important stopover areas is a critical step in conservation and management of migratory birds, and relatively little effort has been directed toward this task in Idaho or the Intermountain West. We used mist-net captures to describe the relative abundance, species richness, and community similarity of autumn migrant landbirds in the Boise Foothills and Owyhee Mountains of southweste...

Rapid assessment of the riparian zone habitat of river

Some riparian areas of the country are in danger of deterioration due to uncontrolled exploitation coupled with loose implementation of environmental protection policies and regulations. Muleta River, a major watershed in Bukidnon, Philippines, was assessed to determine the present condition of its riparian habitat. Abiotic and biotic conditions of the river were assessed. Other factors includi...

Correction: Fire and Grazing Influences on Rates of Riparian Woody Plant Expansion along Grassland Streams

Grasslands are threatened globally due to the expansion of woody plants. The few remaining headwater streams within tallgrass prairies are becoming more like typical forested streams due to rapid conversion of riparian zones from grassy to wooded. Forestation can alter stream hydrology and biogeochemistry. We estimated the rate of riparian woody plant expansion within a 30 m buffer zone surroun...

Fire and riparian ecosystems in landscapes of the western USA

Despite the numerous values of riparian areas and the recognition of fire as a critical natural disturbance, few studies have investigated the behavior, properties, and influence of natural fire in riparian areas of the western USA. Riparian areas frequently differ from adjacent uplands in vegetative composition and structure, geomorphology, hydrology, microclimate, and fuel characteristics. Th...
