چکیده

Many questions in physical cosmology regarding the thermal history of the intergalactic medium, chemical enrichment, reionization, etc. are thought to be intimately related to the nature and evolution of pregalactic structure. In particular the efficiency of primordial star formation and the primordial IMF are of special interest. We present results from high resolution three–dimensional adaptive mesh refinement simulations that follow the collapse of primordial molecular clouds and their subsequent fragmentation within a cosmologically representative volume. Comoving scales from 128 kpc down to 1 pc are followed accurately. Dark matter dynamics, hydrodynamics and all relevant chemical and radiative processes (cooling) are followed self-consistently for a cluster normalized CDM structure formation model. Primordial molecular clouds with ∼ 10 solar masses are assembled by mergers of multiple objects that have formed hydrogen molecules in the gas phase with a fractional abundance of < ∼ 10 . As the subclumps merge cooling lowers the temperature to ∼ 200 K in a “cold pocket” at the center of the halo. Within this cold pocket, a quasi–hydrostatically contracting core with mass ∼ 200 M⊙ and number densities > ∼ 10 5 cm is found. We find that less than 1% of the primordial gas in such small scale structures cools and collapses to sufficiently high densities to be available for primordial star formation. Furthermore, it is worthwhile to note that this study achieved the highest dynamic range covered by structured adaptive mesh techniques in cosmological hydrodynamics to date.

Primordial Star Formation under Far-Ultraviolet Radiation

Thermal and chemical evolution of primordial gas clouds irradiated with farultraviolet (FUV; hν < 13.6 eV) radiation is investigated. In clouds irradiated by intense FUV radiation, sufficient hydrogen molecules to be important for cooling are never formed. However, even without molecular hydrogen, if the clouds are massive enough, they start collapsing via atomic hydrogen line cooling. Such clo...

Fragmentation of the Primordial Gas Clouds and the Lower Limit on the Mass of the First Stars

We discuss the fragmentation of primordial gas clouds in the universe after decoupling. Comparing the timescale of collapse with that of fragmentation, we obtain the typical mass of a fragment both numerically and analytically. We show that the estimated mass gives the minimum mass of a fragment that is formed from the primordial gas cloud and essentially determined by the Chandrasekhar mass. S...

The Formation of Stellar Clusters in Turbulent Molecular Clouds: Effects of the Equation of State

We study numerically the effect of varying the equation of state (EOS) on the formation of stellar clusters in turbulent molecular clouds. Our results show that the EOS plays an important role in the fragmentation of the clouds, and the determination of the initial mass function (IMF) of the protostellar cores. Fragmentation decreases with increasing adiabatic index γ in the range 0.2 < γ < 1.4...

Destruction of Molecular Hydrogen during Cosmological Reionization

We investigate the ability of primordial gas clouds to retain molecular hydrogen (H 2) during the initial phase of the reionization epoch. We nd that before the Strr omgren spheres of the individual ionizing sources overlap, the UV background below the ionization threshold is able to penetrate large clouds and suppress their H 2 abundance. The consequent lack of H 2 cooling could prevent the co...

The thermal evolution of primordial gas clouds : A clue to galaxy formation

The thermal evolution of the primordial gas cloud is investigated. First, we study non-spherical primordial gas clouds of mass M = 10 6 M . We study two cases: 1) prolate and oblate clouds without angular momentum, 2) initially spherical, oblate and prolate clouds with angular momentum. In the spherical case, the magnitude of the angular momentum is the key quantity which determines the fragmen...
