چکیده

Natural images follow statistics inherited by the structure of our physical (visual) environment. In particular, a prominent facet of this structure is that images can be described by a relatively sparse number of features. To investigate the role of this sparseness in the efficiency of the neural code, we designed a new class of random textured stimuli with a controlled sparseness value inspired by measurements of natural images. Then, we tested the impact of this sparseness parameter on the firing pattern observed in a population of retinal ganglion cells recorded ex vivo in the retina of a rodent, the Octodon degus. These recordings showed in particular that the reliability of spike timings varies with respect to the sparseness with globally a similar trend than the distribution of sparseness statistics observed in natural images. These results suggest that the code represented in the spike pattern of ganglion cells may adapt to this aspect of the statistics of natural images. ∗See http://invibe.net/LaurentPerrinet. Development of localized oriented receptive fields by learning a translation-invariant code for natural images.

Neurons in the mammalian primary visual cortex are known to possess spatially localized, oriented receptive fields. It has previously been suggested that these distinctive properties may reflect an efficient image encoding strategy based on maximizing the sparseness of the distribution of output neuronal activities or alternately, extracting the independent components of natural image ensembles...

Cell based therapies in retinal diseases

Background Degenerative retinal diseases, including age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and hereditary retinal dystrophies are major causes of blindness. The principal defect in these diseases is cell loss which is amenable to both cell based neuroprotective and neuroregenerative therapies. To briefly review the lines of research and potential candidates for cell based therapies among ...

Receptive Field Encoding Model for Dynamic Natural Vision

Introduction: Encoding models are used to predict human brain activity in response to sensory stimuli. The purpose of these models is to explain how sensory information represent in the brain. Convolutional neural networks trained by images are capable of encoding magnetic resonance imaging data of humans viewing natural images. Considering the hemodynamic response function, these networks are ...

Detection of Microaneurysms in Retinal Angiography Images Using the Circular Hough Transform

This paper presents an automated method for detecting microaneurysms in the retinal angiographic images by using image processing techniques. In the presented method, in order to fade or remove the pseudo images, first retinal images are pre-processed. Then microaneurysms are identified by circular Hough transform. In the existing methods of dete...

Using Temperature of IR Sources for Assessing Photochemical and Aphakic Retinal Hazard

Introduction Blue light is a part of the spectrum with the highest energy content, which can reach the retina. The damage that it can cause to the retina is called photochemical or blue-light retinal injury. For the retinal injury assessment of the photochemical and aphakic retinal hazards in the wavelength range of 300-700 nm, use of effective spectral radiance limits (W.m-2.sr-1) seems to be ...
