Control of food intake and meal patterns in monkeys. PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 27(5) 803-810, 1981.-Feeding patterns have been studied in 10 adult male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) adapted to primate restraint chairs for physiological studies. Using an automated computer-monitored liquid diet feeding system, feeding behavior was studied under 8 hour and 24 hour feeding schedules. Caiorie/kg intake was significantly reduced with the 8 hour schedule (0<0.05). Average rate of weight gain and feeding efficiency were also lower with 8 hour feeding, but not significantly different from 24 hour ad lib feeding (0>0.10). Meal size was negatively correlated with meal frequency across monkeys, but not within monkeys. Although monkeys ingested 78% of their voluntary intake during the light hours, there was no difference in meal size, meal duration, or rate of feeding between light and dark periods. With feeding restricted to 8 hours during the light period, meal size was positively correlated with the length of the interval preceding the meal in 4 of 6 monkeys, and meal size was also positively correlated with length of the postmeal interval in 3 of 6 monkeys. In contrast, 24 hour ad lib fed monkeys showed no relationship between premeal interval and subsequent meal size, but a positive correlation between meal size and postmeal interval in 3 of 4 monkeys. We conclude that feeding schedule or deprivation state may alter the relative roles of "hunger" and "satiety" signals in regulating food intake amounts and patterns. Studies of feeding regulation have been carried out primarily in may provide data important to understanding human feeding behavior. We now present an analysis of feeding patterns and caloric intakes of adult rhesus monkeys, in a model developed specifically to permit sensitive and detailed simultaneous assessment of the multiple behavioral and physiological parameters involved in the regulation of food intake. Results support the use of monkeys in studies of the physiological controls of feeding, and emphasize the importance of within animal comparisons when seeking to demonstrate effects on feeding behavior. METHOD Subjects The feeding behavior of 10 male rhesus monkeys fMacaca mulatta) was studied under chair-restrained conditions prior to or between experiments requiring chronic intravenous catheterization. Six monkeys were …

Salmon calcitonin reduces food intake through changes in meal sizes in male rhesus monkeys.
Amylinergic mechanisms are believed to be involved in the control of appetite. This study examined the effects of the amylin agonist, salmon calcitonin, on food intake and meal patterns in adult male rhesus monkeys. Fifteen minutes before the onset of their 6-h daily feeding period, monkeys received intramuscular injections of various doses of salmon calcitonin (0.032, 0.056, 0.1, 0.32, and 1 m...
متن کاملPeptide YY(3-36) inhibits gastric emptying and produces acute reductions in food intake in rhesus monkeys.
Peptide YY3-36 [PYY(3-36)], a gastrointestinal peptide that is released into the circulation in response to ingesting a meal, has recently been suggested to play a role in controlling food intake. PYY(3-36) has been reported to inhibit food intake following peripheral administration in rodents and in human subjects. To more fully characterize the potential feeding actions of PYY(3-36), we exami...

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and amylin mediate the feedback control of eating by seemingly separate, but overlapping mechanisms. This study examined the effects of combined doses of the GLP-1 agonist, exendin-4 (Ex-4), and the amylin analog, salmon calcitonin (sCT), on food intake and meal patterns in adult male rhesus monkeys. Monkeys received intramuscular injections of Ex-4 (0, 0.1, 0.32...
متن کاملEvaluating the Effect of Chronotype on Meal Timing and Obesity in Iranian Housewives: A Cross-Sectional Study
Background and Objective: Recent studies have shown a relationship between energy regulation and the circadian rhythm at behavioral, molecular, and physiological levels. The present study investigated the effect of chronotype on meal timing and obesity in Iranian housewives. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out using a convenience-sampling method through the partic...
متن کاملSmall changes in meal patterns lead to significant changes in total caloric intake. Effects of diet and social status on food intake in female rhesus monkeys.
Social subordination in macaques is a well-established model to study the adverse effects of psychosocial stress on a number of health outcomes, including stress-induced eating. The present analysis was conducted to empirically define a meal among free-feeding female rhesus monkeys and to examine the roles of meal patterning (e.g., meal size, meal frequency, and snacking patterns) in findings f...
