Seasonal Changes in Thymus in Ring-necked Pheasants
نویسنده
چکیده
The thymus, a paired lymphoid gland located in the neck region or upper abdominal cavity in birds and mammals, has been the subject of considerable attention in recent years. This gland plays a major role in the immunological system, being indispensable for the development of lymphoid cells in the lymph nodes, spleen, and other lymphoid organs; the thymus, itself, does not form antibodies (Haurowitz 1965: 19-20). It is commonly stated that the thymus attains its largest size in young animals and involutes with increase in age (Kirkpatrick 1944:184; Bradley 1950:74; Quiring 1950 : 478; Weichert 1951:290; Sturkie 1965: 656). However, this lymphoid gland also undergoes a period of enlargement and subsequent regression in postbreeding adult birds (Hahn 1947:187, 1956). Data are presented in this report to demonstrate seasonal and age-associated changes in weights of thymus glands in Ring-necked Pheasants (Phusiunus colchicus) .

Comparative evaluation of clinical efficiency of intramuscular diazepam-ketamine, medetomidine-ketamine, and xylazine-ketamine anaesthesia in Ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus)
Background: Several injectable anaesthetics and sedatives are used in various avian species for general anaesthesia. Birds are very sensitive animals and any mismanagement in a crisis can lead to immediate shock and death. Therefore, careful selection of the safest possible anaesthetic agent and dose is very important. Aims: The aim of this study was to examine...
متن کاملSerum Biochemical Parameters in the Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) on Breeding Season
The influence of sex on serum biochemical parameters was investigated in adult (52 week-old) ring-necked pheasants on reproductive activity. Statistical comparisons were made for differences in values between male and female birds. Adult females had higher values for serum total protein and albumin. Significant variations were not observed in the analyses in relation to the sex of the birds for...

In 1971, 1983 and 1984, ectoparasites were identified on 61 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) from Nebraska. Birds were collected throughout the state from 11 of 93 counties. Four species of chewing lice (Mallophaga) were collected: Lipeurus maculosus, Goniodes colchici, Lagopoecus colchicus and Amyrsidea megalosoma. One species of analgid mite, Megninia sp. was collected. Apparently,...
متن کاملFall-to-Winter and Winter Movements of Pheasants in lowa
Ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) movements were studied in south-central Hamilton County, Iowa, during the fall and winter of 1966-67. Fall-to-winter movements of 23 pheasants averaged 0.66 mile. The greatest movement recorded was 2.45 miles. There was no evidence of oriented movement either in direction or to specific wintering areas. The mean winter movement of 43 pheasants was 0.20...

We investigated the replication and transmission of avian influenza A viruses in two species thought to be intermediate hosts in the spread of influenza A viruses in live poultry markets: Chinese ring-necked pheasants and chukar partridges. All 15 hemagglutinin subtypes replicated in pheasants, and most subtypes transmitted to naïve contact pheasants, primarily via the fecal-oral route. Many vi...
