DE OYA, MANUEL, WILLIAM F. PRIGGE, DONNA E. SWENSON, AND FRANCISCO GRANDE. Role of glucagon on fatty liver production in birds. Am. J. Physiol. 221(l) : 25-30. 1971 .-Infusions of glucagon (0.22 pg/kg per min) and of oleic acid (2.0 mEq/kg per hr), maintaining in geese similar levels of plasma free fatty acids (FFA), had d ff i erent effects on plasma and liver triglycerides (TGL). Glucagon caused a small elevation of plasma TGL and marked deposition of TGL in the liver. Oleic acid caused marked elevation of plasma TGL, but no deposition of TGL in the liver. When glucagon infusion (1 .O pg/kg per min) was superimposed on that of oleic acid, plasma TGL decreased sharply and a liver TGL deposit developed. Infusion of glucose added to that of oleic acid caused an elevation of plasma TGL significantly greater than that produced by the infusion of oleic acid alone. These results indicate that glucagon interferes with the release of TGL by the liver. It is suggested that this effect may be due to decreased synthesis of the protein moiety of the lipoproteins resulting from the known catabolic action of glucagon on protein metabolism in the liver.

متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF GLUCAGON, INSULIN AND S TEROID HORMONES ON PHOSPHATIDATE PHOSPHOHYDROLASE ACTIVITY IN RAT LIVERS
The effects of steroid hormones, glucagon and insulin on rat liver phosphatidate phosphohydrolase (PAP) activity were studied both in vitro and in vivo. Incubation of rat hepatocytes with each hormone showed that dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), progesterone and testosterone increase PAP activity by 44.6, 37 and 36.9%, respectively. Estradiol, however, decreased enzyme activity by 13.6% under...
متن کاملThe effects of glucagon, dibutyryl cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate, and concentration of free fatty acid on hepatic lipid metabolism.
The effects on the isolated perfused rat liver of glucagon, dibutyryl 3’, 5’-adenosine monophosphate (dibutyryl cyclic AMP), and oleic acid were studied with particular reference to actions on hepatic metabolism of lipids. The rate of uptake of oleic acid by livers from normal fed animals was proportional to the concentration of free fatty acid in the medium and generally was not altered signif...
متن کاملInvolvement of steatosis-induced glucagon resistance in hyperglucagonaemia.
For more than a century type 2 diabetes has been looked upon mainly as an insulin-related disease and it is well-acknowledged that insulin resistance and beta cell dysfunction play important roles in the pathophysiology of the disease. During the last couple of decades, glucagon has also been recognised to play a significant role in type 2 diabetic pathophysiology. However, the mechanisms under...
متن کاملEffects of feed restriction and dietary fat type on mRNA expression of liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) in broilers
Background: Liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP) is the main cytosolic binding site for long chain fatty acids in hepatocytes. FABPs enhance the uptake of fatty acids into the cell by increasing their concentration due to decreasing concentration of unbound fatty acids inside the cell. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary unsaturated to saturated fatty a...
