چکیده

Dynamic models of liquid chillers are gaining importance in recent years as tools for evaluating feedback controllers and to study transient system performance in general. Such system models consist of component models for the heat-exchangers, the compressor and the expansion device. The modeling of the heat-exchangers is particularly significant as they constitute the largest thermal capacitances in the system and thus determine the system response. Existing models of liquid chillers use either highly simplified lumped parameter approximations for the heatexchangers or highly detailed finite-volume formulations. A moving boundary formulation applied to both shelland-tube construction heat-exchangers within a system model with a centrifugal chiller has not been found in the literature. This paper presents a complete system dynamic model of a centrifugal liquid chiller using this approach for both the evaporator and the condenser. The heat-exchangers are flooded types with refrigerant on the shell-side and water as the secondary fluid. The dynamics of the compressor and expansion valve are also included. Simulation results are presented for the system model during different load-change transients. The model is validated using data from a 90-ton single-stage, centrifugal chiller test stand with R134a as the refrigerant. The model is shown to predict system behavior accurately while running faster than real time on a contemporary desktop computer.

Consistent Initialization of System of Differential-Algebraic Equations for Dynamic Simulation of Centrifugal Chillers

For simulation of centrifugal chiller system with differential algebraic equations (DAEs), consistent initial conditions are difficult to obtain due to the two-phase refrigerant cycle and the connections between several components. Existing rigorous initialization methods are generally not easy to apply and not suitable for the particular problem of centrifugal chiller simulation, such as the s...

Modelica Based Dynamic Modeling of Water-Cooled Centrifugal Chillers

In this paper, the transient model of a water-cooled centrifugal chiller is developed in Modelica with Dymola and the TLK/IfT Library (TIL). The centrifugal compressor is modeled in detail based on the turbomachinery theory. The chiller capacity control is achieved by the combination of variable inlet guide vane (VIGV) and variable speed drive (VSD). The shell-and-tube heat exchangers are discr...

Comparison of Chiller Models for use in Model-Based Fault Detection

Selecting the model is an important and essential step in model based fault detection and diagnosis (FDD). Factors that are considered in evaluating a model include accuracy, training data requirements, calibration effort, generality, and computational requirements. The objective of this study was to evaluate different modeling approaches for their applicability to model based FDD of vapor comp...

A Dynamic Model Of A Vapor Compression Liquid Chiller

Dynamic models of vapor compression systems are important tools for HVAC engineers in the development and evaluation feedback control and fault detection and diagnostic (FDD) algorithms. Significant literature exists on dynamic models of vapor compression systems. Much of it is restricted to air-to-air systems and few papers deal with liquid chillers. Most of existing liquid chiller models revi...

Asymptotic Approximations of the Solution for a Traveling String under Boundary Damping

Transversal vibrations of an axially moving string under boundary damping are investigated. Mathematically, it represents a homogenous linear partial differential equation subject to nonhomogeneous boundary conditions. The string is moving with a relatively (low) constant speed, which is considered to be positive.  The string is kept fixed at the first end, while the other end is tied with the ...
