The Elements of Functional Phonology
نویسنده
چکیده
Phonological structures and processes are determined by the functional principles of minimization of articulatory effort and maximization of perceptual contrast. We can solve many hitherto controversial issues if we are aware of the different roles of articulation and perception in phonology. Traditionally separate devices like the segment, spreading, licensing, underspecification, feature geometry, and OCP effects, are surface phenomena created by the interaction of more fundamental principles. 1 I thank Louis Pols and Mirjam Ernestus for their comments on earlier versions of this paper.

Code-Copying in the Balochi Language of Sistan
This empirical study deals with language contact phenomena in Sistan. Code-copying is viewed as a strategy of linguistic behavior when a dominated language acquires new elements in lexicon, phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatic organization, etc., which can be interpreted as copies of a dominating language. In this framework Persian is regarded as the model code which provides elements for b...
متن کاملNatural Phonology as a Functional Theory
This paper presents Natural Phonology as a functional theory. Natural Phonology is shown to be functional in two senses: as focusing on explanation and thus increasing our understanding of how language works, and as having practical applications, especially to second language acquisition and speech therapy. The contribution argues that crucial as formalism is in computational linguistics and sp...
متن کاملCorpus phonology with speech resources
1. Phonetic considerations in phonological research Phonology is concerned with characterizing the sound patterns of language, typically presented in terms of a system of contrastive sound elements (e.g., syllables, segments, features) and the distribution of those sounds in the makeup of phonological words and phrases. This focus on the sound system and the characteristic patterns that arise w...
متن کاملIntonational phonology in Bengali and English infant-directed speech
We examined the phonetics and phonology of intonation of infant-directed speech (IDS) and non-IDS in story-reading in two typologically-divergent languages, English and Bengali. In addition to finding an increase in f0 range and variability in IDS, replicating previous work on IDS prosody, we found novel evidence that f0 manipulations in IDS are constrained by intonational phonology. Speakers i...
متن کاملOptionality and Gradience in Persian Phonology: An Optimality Treatment
The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
