چکیده

Contribution of heterotrophic marine bacteria (HB) to the particulate beam attenuation coefficient (cp) was estimated as a function of latitude in diverse marine regions. Calculations were based on surface measurements (0 to 20 m depth) of bacterial abundance and biovolume, physiooptical empirical relationships, and light scattering models. Relative contribution of spherical HB to cp (cHB/cp) was commonly below 10%, and slightly increased (~3%) when bacterial shape was assumed to be cylindrical. HB accounted for a larger fraction of cp magnitude at lower latitudes because of the greater abundance of bacteria. HB explained about a third of cp spatial variability in Antarctic (Antarctic Polar Front, Ross Sea) and non-polar (equatorial Pacific Ocean, Arabian Sea) oceanic regions.

Effect of particulate aggregation in aquatic environments on the beam attenuation and its utility as a proxy for particulate mass.

Marine aggregates, agglomerations of particles and dissolved materials, are an important particulate pool in aquatic environments, but their optical properties are not well understood. To improve understanding of the optical properties of aggregates, two related studies are presented. In the first, an in situ manipulation experiment is described, in which beam attenuation of undisturbed and she...

Phylogenetic differences in attached and free-living bacterial communities in a temperate coastal lagoon during summer, revealed via high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Most of what is known about coastal free-living and attached bacterial diversity is based on open coasts, with high particulate and nutrient riverine supply, terrestrial runoffs, and anthropogenic activities. The Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Canada) are dominated by shallow lagoons with small, relatively pristine catchments and no freshwater input apart from rain. Such conditio...

A study on the composition of size-fractionated suspended particulate matter in shallow coastal waters of Chabahar Bay

Abstract In the present study, sampling and analysis of size-fractionated suspended particulate matter (SPM) in coastal waters of Chabahar Bay have been done for the first time. Sampling has been conducted on December 25 of 2018 from 5 stations in different locations of the Bay in order to evaluate the effects of natural and human activities on SPM mass and composition. With an overall average...

Acceptance angle effects on the beam attenuation in the ocean.

The beam attenuation serves as a proxy for particulate matter and is a key parameter in visibility algorithms for the aquatic environment. It is well known, however, that the beam attenuation is a function of the acceptance angle of the transmissometer used to measure it. Here we compare eight different transmissometers with four different acceptance angles using four different deployment strat...

Bacterial communities in PM2.5 and PM10 inside the cage broiler houses before and after disinfection

Background: Air in broiler houses is contaminated with considerable amounts of microbial aerosols, which affects the health of humans and birds. Thorough cleaning and disinfecting should be carried out to reduce particulate concentrations and minimize airborne microorganisms. Aims: To evaluate the effects of cleaning and disinfecting measures on bacterial commu...
