چکیده

The existence of two groups of acidophilic (mostly present in soils at pH less than 5) and acidintolerant Collembolan species has been demonstrated concurrently by several authors in the course of biocoenotic studies. The examination of morphological features points to a strong relationship between acidophily and hypothetical phyletic relationships between both groups. In the light of Earth history I postulate that acidophilic springtails are relicts from the time when adaptive radiation took place within Collembola, i.e. before the Carboniferous age. At this time soils were poor in nutrients, vegetation was of the acidifying type, and the atmosphere was richer than now in carbon dioxide. Thus Paleozoic environmental conditions were quite similar to those now prevailing in the most acid soils.

Ancient Ephemeroptera–Collembola Symbiosis Fossilized in Amber Predicts Contemporary Phoretic Associations

X-ray computed tomography is used to identify a unique example of fossilized phoresy in 16 million-year-old Miocene Dominican amber involving a springtail being transported by a mayfly. It represents the first evidence (fossil or extant) of phoresy in adult Ephemeroptera and only the second record in Collembola (the first is also preserved in amber). This is the first record of Collembola using...

Colonization of heavy metal-polluted soils by Collembola: preliminary experiments in compartmented boxes

9 10 Two-week laboratory experiments were carried out in plastic boxes separated in two connected 11 compartments filled with a neutral soil (mull humus) at pH 7.7 and an acid soil (moder humus) at pH 12 4.3, containing their original faunas. Migration of Collembola from one compartment to the other was 13 allowed through a perforated wall. The mull was contaminated with three concentrations of...

Prey selection by linyphiid spiders: molecular tracking of the effects of alternative prey on rates of aphid consumption in the field.

A molecular approach, using aphid-specific monoclonal antibodies, was used to test the hypothesis that alternative prey can affect predation on aphids by linyphiid spiders. These spiders locate their webs in cereal crops within microsites where prey density is high. Previous work demonstrated that of two subfamilies of Linyphiidae, one, the Linyphiinae, is web-dependent and makes its webs at si...

A review of Fennoscandian arthropods living on and in snow

A permanent snow cover for several months is typical for large parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland. Snow layers thicker than about 20 cm insulate the soil surface and stabilize the ground temperature close to 0°C. Many ground-living invertebrates are active at this temperature in the subnivean air space. From this “base camp”, some invertebrates migrate upwards to use the snow as a substrate. T...

Collembola are Unlikely to Cause Human Dermatitis

Abstract There have been several unconfirmed case reports of dermatitis caused by Collembola (springtails). We recently investigated two nurses with dermatitis suspected to be caused by Drepanura Schött (Collembola: Entomobryidae). IgE antibodies to Collembola proteins were not detected in sera from the nurses and skin tests with the Collembola extract and crushed whole Collembola were negative...
