An integral - field spectroscopic strong lens survey

چکیده
We present the observational results of a survey for strong gravitational lens systems consisting of extended emission-line galaxies lensed by intervening earlytype galaxies, conducted using integral field units (IFUs) of the Magellan IMACS and Gemini GMOS-N spectrographs. These data are highly valuable for corroborating the lensing interpretation of Hubble Space Telescope imaging data. We show that in many cases, ground-based IFU spectroscopy is in fact competitive with space-based imaging for the measurement of the mass model parameters of the lensing galaxy. We demonstrate a novel technique of three-dimensional gravitational lens modeling for a single lens system with a resolved lensed rotation curve. We also describe the details of our custom IFU data analysis software, which performs optimal multi-fiber extraction, relative and absolute wavelength calibration to a few hundredths of a pixel RMS, and nearly Poisson-limited sky subtraction. The Sloan Lens Acs Survey. I. a Large Spectroscopically Selected Sample of Massive Early-type Lens Galaxies
The Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey is an efficient Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Snapshot imaging survey for new galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses. The targeted lens candidates are selected spectroscopically from within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database of galaxy spectra for having multiple nebular emission lines at a redshift significantly higher than that of the SDSS target ga...
متن کاملWeak Lensing Discovery and Tomography of a Cluster at Z = 0.68
We report the discovery, spectroscopic confirmation, and weak lensing tomography of a massive cluster of galaxies at z = 0.68. The first shear-selected cluster from the Deep Lens Survey, a deep optical imaging survey of 28 deg, it dominates the weak lensing mass map of its 40 field. At more than twice the redshift of the only previous shear-selected cluster, it demonstrates that the redshift ra...
متن کاملLensing Probabilities for Spectroscopically Selected Galaxy-galaxy Strong Lenses
Spectroscopic galaxy-galaxy lens searches are presently the most prolific method of identifying strong lens systems in large data sets. We study the probabilities associated with these lens searches, namely the probability of identifying a candidate with rogue [O II] emission lines in a galaxy’s spectrum, and the probability that the candidate will show features of strong lensing in follow-up p...
متن کاملThe Integral Field Unit for the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager at Keck II
We report on the design, development and commissioning of an Integral Field Unit (IFU) that has been built for the Echellette Spectrograph and Imager (ESI) at the W.M. Keck Observatory. This image slicer–based IFU, which was commissioned in the spring of 2004 covers a contiguous field of 5.65 x 4.0 arcseconds in 5 slices that are 1.13 arcseconds wide. The IFU passes a spectral range of 0.39-1.1...
متن کاملThe SAMI Galaxy Survey: early data release and first science
The Sydney–AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) Galaxy Survey is an ongoing project to obtain spatially resolved spectroscopic observations of ∼3400 galaxies by mid-2016. To date, a total of ∼1000 galaxies have been observed, making the SAMI Galaxy Survey the largest integral field survey in existence. In July 2014 the early data release for the SAMI galaxy Survey occurred, with ...
