Ethernet in the First Mile: an opportunity for xDSL?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Three different transport modes have been specified and standardized for use in various Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) systems: Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), Synchronous Transfer Mode (STM) and more recently Packet Transfer Mode (PTM). Although ATM and STM have successfully been used for the transport of IEEE 802.3 MAC Frames (more commonly called Ethernet frames), PTM is generally believed to be more appropriate for this purpose because it is inherently packet-oriented. The industry interest in native packet transport over xDSL links has greatly increased since the start of IEEE’s “Ethernet in the First Mile” project, which covers this topic among others. In this paper we present a critical study of several aspects of native packet transport over xDSL links, which shows that native Ethernet may not be ready to conquer the last mile.

HomeRF: wireless networking for the connected home
The SWAP specification for wireless voice and data networking within the home will enable a new class of mobile consumer devices that draw from the power and content of the Internet and the Home PC. If cable modems and xDSL represent the “last mile” access to the home, then HomeRF ’s mission with SWAP could be called the “very last 150 feet” within and around the home. HomeRF has the broad back...
متن کاملWDM Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation Schemes for Ethernet PONs
WDM based dynamic bandwidth allocation schemes are proposed as potential future-proof upgrade solutions for access PON systems. The schemes represent cost-efficient ways to exploit the virtually unlimited bandwidth afforded by passive optical architectures whilst remaining fully compatible with the IEEE Ethernet standard for the first mile (EFM 802.3ah).
متن کاملDefinitions and Managed Objects for Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) Functions on Ethernet-Like Interfaces
This document defines objects for managing Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM) capabilities on Ethernet-like interfaces conformant to the Ethernet OAM functionality defined in the Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) clauses of the Ethernet standards. The Ethernet OAM functionality is complementary to the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) in that it is focused on a small set o...
متن کاملRATE Control for Bandwidth Allocated Services in IEEE 802.3 Ethernet
We investigate how to add rate control to full-duplex IEEE 802.3 Ethernet. We envision the need for rate control in order to enable bandwidth allocation in future Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) subscriber services. We propose a RATE mechanism that can be implemented with a simple byte-based leaky bucket. We demonstrate with simulation methods that RATE can isolate flows and provide lower loss...

With the explosive growth of the Internet and ever-increasing users’ demand for various broadband applications, such as Internet telephony, high-definition television (HDTV), interactive games, and video on demand, subscriber access networks, which cover the “last mile” area, and serve numerous residential and small business users, have become a bandwidth bottleneck in providing broadband servi...
