Compliance with the peritoneal dialysis prescription is poor.

چکیده
T he adequacy of peritoneal dialysis in terms of urea and creatinine kinetics is becoming better established (1 ,2). Weekly creatinine clearance of more than 50 L normalized to body surface area are currently recommended for minimally adequate dialysis. The delivery of an adequate peritoneal dialysis prescription is dependent on the compliance of the patient with that prescription. Keen et at. (3) have found overall compliance with prescribed exchanges in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis to be only 78% . The purpose of this study was to determine the compliance of a group of patients on peritoneal dialysis through the use of creatinine generation rates. The utility of measured creatinine generation compared with estimated creatinine production depends on whether the patient is in the steady state while dialysate and urine are collected for analysis. Appreciating the overall compliance of peritoneal dialysis patients may alter the way in which it is prescribed.

Recommended clinical practices for maximizing peritoneal dialysis clearances.
Data from the Canada-U.S.A. (CANUSA) Study have recently confirmed a long-suspected linkage between total clearance and patient survival in peritoneal dialysis (PD). Recognizing that what we have historically accepted as adequate PD simply is not, the Ad Hoc Committee on Peritoneal Dialysis Adequacy met in January, 1996. This committee of invited experts was convened by Baxter Healthcare Corpor...
متن کاملSupportive treatment of delayed perforated colon due to peritoneal dialysis catheterization
Background: One of uncommon complications in patients with peritoneal catheter is colon rupture which usually occurs during catheter insertion. In this paper, we present a case of delayed perforated colon following insertion of peritoneal catheter. Case presentation: A 37-year-old man was suffering from chronic renal failure (CRF). Nine months after peritoneal catheterization, peritoneal dialy...
متن کاملCompliance in peritoneal dialysis: a qualitative study of renal nurses.
End-stage renal failure is a life-threatening condition, often treated with home-based peritoneal dialysis (PD). PD is a demanding regimen, and the patients who practise it must make numerous lifestyle changes and learn complicated biomedical techniques. In our experience, the renal nurses who provide most PD education frequently express concerns that patient compliance with their teaching is p...
متن کاملSleep quality and its correlates in the first year of dialysis.
Although sleep problems are thought to be prevalent among patients who undergo dialysis, there is only limited information on the determinants of sleep quality and the change in sleep quality during the first year of dialysis treatment. This report uses data from a national cohort study of incident hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients to identify the correlates of sleep quality and to ...
متن کاملRelation between Malnutrition–Inflammation–Atherosclerosis (MIA complex) in Diabetic Patients with Peritoneal Dialysis
Objective: Atherosclerosis disease, inflammation and malnutrition have strong association with end stage renal disease (ESRD). Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most commonly ESRD causes. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) could be associated with inflammation. Type 2 diabetic patients with advanced nephropathy show the highest levels of inflammatory markers. This study was designed to determine the associa...
