Decavitator Human-Powered Hydrofoil

چکیده
The Decavitator is a human-powered hydrofoil water vehicle designed for the fastest-possible speed over short distances. Since 1988, numerous versions of the underwater hydro-foil system, control and stability system, and pontoons were built and tested. In its present connguration, the vehicle consists of two kayak-type pontoons, with a central frame supporting the rider and the large air propeller. Two underwater hydrofoil wings are positioned directly under the rider. The vehicle has three operating modes: on the hulls, on two wings, or on one wing. In the fastest one-wing mode, the Decavitator in October 1991 set an oocial speed record (pending ratiication) of 18.50 knots / 9.53 m/s over a 100-meter course, with an unoocial 19.59 knots / 10.08 m/s being the fastest measured speed to date. This article will outline the technical features and design philosophy of the latest version of the vehicle.

Feasibility Study of Building a Human Powered Hydrofoil Vessel
In this paper, a feasibility study of building a Human Powered Hydrofoil (HPH) vessel is reported. Hydrofoil vessels are a well-known class of high-speed crafts. In addition to high-speed operation, the hydrofoils have a reliable maneuvering capability, good stability and proper operation in waves. Also, a human powered vehicle, nowadays is an advancing idea. Different aspects of the design and...
متن کاملLES of Partial Cavitation Around a 2D Plane-Convex Hydrofoil Large Eddy Simulation of Partial Cavitation Around a 2D Plane-Convex Hydrofoil
Investigations of attached partial cavitation are important because to prevent damages in hydrulic machinery and to reduce the costs. As expected computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods have been developed for more than 40 years to understand this phenomenon and to improve the machinery designs, as pumps and hydraulic turbines. However, cavitation appears at high Reynolds numbers, so that, t...
متن کاملCalculation of Three-dimensional Unsteady Sheet Cavitation by a Simple Suraface Panel Method “sqcm”
This paper presents a calculation method for the 3-D unsteady cavitating hydrofoil problem. The method is based on a simple surface panel method “SQCM” which satisfies easily the Kutta condition even in the unsteady problem. This method is applied to the Wagner problem, heaving hydrofoil and the hydrofoil in sinusoidal gust. We show some calculated results for partially cavitating and supercavi...
متن کاملEffect of trailing edge shape on hydrodynamic damping for a hydrofoil
Flow induced vibration on a hydrofoil may be significantly reduced with a slight modification of the trailing edge without alteration of the hydrodynamic performance. Particularly, the so called Donaldson trailing edge shape gave remarkable results and is being used in a variety of industrial applications. Nevertheless, the physics behind vibration reduction is still not understood. In the pres...

This paper presents the design and implementation of a turtle hydrofoil for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV). The final design of the AUV must have navigation performance like a turtle, which has also been the biomimetic inspiration for the design of the hydrofoil and propulsion system. The hydrofoil design is based on a National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) 0014 hydrodynamic...
