Transfusion malaria in sick neonates.

چکیده
Malaria is an uncommon illness during the neonatal period and early infancy. Transplacental barrier, presence of acquired immunity from the mother (in endemic malarious region) and preponderance of fetal hemoglobin are some of the reasons for this observations(l). Post-transfusion malaria is a possibility not only after whole blood transfusion, but also after infusion of components such as platelet, leukocyte concentrates or cryoprecipitate. In neonates and infants who have contracted the infection this way, it can be quite severe or even fatal. This may be in part due to delayed diagnosis or it may have further complicated a serious underlying disorder, or poor general condition. Here we report three cases of malaria in infants who had received blood transfusion during the neonatal period.

Adverse Events of Exchange Transfusion in Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia
Introduction: Jaundice is an important problem during neonatal period. When total serum bilirubin (TSB) level exceeds a critical limit, it crosses the blood brain barrier and results into bilirubin encephalopathy. The main aim of therapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is prevention of bilirubin encephalopathy by phototherapy and/or exchange transfusion. The aims of this study were to evaluate ...
متن کاملIntravenous artesunate for transfusion-transmitted plasmodium vivax malaria in a preterm neonate.
Transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) in neonates is rare. TTM can occur in both endemic and nonendemic areas because the current tests used to screen the donor blood for malaria are unreliable when there is low parasitemia. Malaria must be considered as an important differential diagnosis for neonatal sepsis after exchange transfusion. Management strategy in TTM in the neonatal period is not s...
متن کاملA Prospective Study on QT Dispersion in Neonates: A New Risk Factor
Background: QT dispersion (QTd) especially after ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction is a prognostic predictor of mortality, in adult medicine. Objective: This study was undertaken to determine the correlation between QT dispersion and neonatal stress. Neonates were divided into 3 groups: normal term (30 cases), normal preterm (30 cases) and sick neonates (36 cases), born between ...
متن کاملThrombocytopenia, bleeding, and use of platelet transfusions in sick neonates.
Survival rates for infants born prematurely have improved significantly, in part due to better supportive care such as RBC transfusion. The role of platelet transfusions in neonates is more controversial. Neonatal thrombocytopenia is common in premature infants. The primary causal factors are intrauterine growth restriction/maternal hypertension, in which the infant presents with thrombocytopen...

Introduction & Objective: Exchange transfusion is replacement of blood or main part of RBC mass and plasma of a recipient by compatible RBC or plasma from one or more donors. This study was carried out with the aim of evaluation the rate of complications of exchange transfusion in hospitalized neonates during 2002-2005. Materials & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was done o...
