چکیده

Indigo is one of the most consumed dyes in the textile sector, as it is widely used for the dyeing of denim clothes. About 15% of indigo used in the dyeing process is discharged to the wastewater treatment plants or sometimes into rivers, in countries where regulations are not strictly applied. In this work, real effluents that contained indigo dye were treated by means of 4 different ultrafiltration membranes. The feasibility to recover the concentrated dye with lab and semi-industrial pilots was also investigated. The studied membranes achieved up to 99% colour removal and 80% chemical oxygen demand (COD) decrease. Finally, the concentrates containing 20 g·L of indigo dye were reused in new dyeing processes. Colour differences (DEcmc) and rubbing and washing fastnesses were evaluated. Fabrics dyed with the recovered indigo concentrates exhibited similar characteristics than the ones obtained with the commercial dye.

Bio-Stoning of Denim- An Environmental-Friendly Approach

Denim jeans, dyed with natural or synthetic indigo, are the most popular garments worn by individuals of all ages and approximately one billion pairs of jeans are produced per annum. Traditionally, denim has been woven with cotton in a warp face twill weave, in which the warp is blue whereas the weft is white. Dyeing is usually performed with pure indigo, or indigo combined with a sulfur dye to...

Present Status of Plant Derived Indigo Dye - a Review

Indigo is the world's most produced synthetic dye because of its use in the denim industry. The wastewaters from the dyeing industry are loaded with pollutant which is the reason there has been an interest in the revival of the indigenous system of dyeing through plant derived indigo. India was the major producer of Indigo in the middle ages with producing 80% of the world's indigo. It is cruci...

Enzyme washing of indigo and sulphur dyed denim

Introduction Denim as a fabric, has received the widest acceptance among all textile products. It has had an incredible influence on consumers both socially and culturally (Paul 2015). This twill cotton fabric usually has warp threads indigo dyed while weft remains plain white. The warp faced fabric therefore looks blue on one side and white on reverse. The warp being ring dyed, creates denim’s...

Poly (Vinylidene Fluride) Membrane Preparation and Characterization: Effects of Mixed Solvents and PEG Molecular Weight

In this study, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes were prepared via immersion precipitation method using a mixture of two solvents triethyl phosphate (TEP) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc), which had different affinities with the nonsolvent (water). Properties of the prepared membranes were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and contact angle and membrane p...
