Designing High-Refractive Index Polymers Using Materials Informatics

چکیده
A machine learning strategy is presented for the rapid discovery of new polymeric materials satisfying multiple desirable properties. Of particular interest is the design of high refractive index polymers. Our in silico approach employs a series of quantitative structure–property relationship models that facilitate rapid virtual screening of polymers based on relevant properties such as the refractive index, glass transition and thermal decomposition temperatures, and solubility in standard solvents. Exploration of the chemical space is carried out using an evolutionary algorithm that assembles synthetically tractable monomers from a database of existing fragments. Selected monomer structures that were further evaluated using density functional theory calculations agree well with model predictions.

Micro-Molded High Q Polymer Resonators for Optical Loss Determination
Replica molding of ultra-high-Q toroidal microresonators can produce polymer microresonators with material-limited quality factors (Q). This was demonstrated previously using polymers which cure thermally. In this work, high Q polymer microresonators were fabricated using the replica molding technique from previously uncharacterized polymers which require either a thermal or UV cure. The qualit...
متن کاملModeling of Slot Waveguide Sensors Based on Polymeric Materials
Slot waveguides are very promising for optical sensing applications because of their peculiar spatial mode profile. In this paper we have carried out a detailed analysis of mode confinement properties in slot waveguides realized in very low refractive index materials. We show that the sensitivity of a slot waveguide is not directly related to the refractive index contrast of high and low materi...
متن کاملCuring Methods Yield Multiple Refractive Index of Benzocyclobutene Polymer Film
Refractive index control of benzocyclobutene (BCB 4024-40) is achieved by facilitating different conditions during the thermal curing of BCB film. Refractive index (RI) change of 1.49% is obtained with curing of BCB film using an oven, while the RI change is 0.1% when the BCB is cured using a hotplate. The two different curing methods exhibit a temperature dependent refractive index change of t...

متن کاملCorrelation and Prediction of the Refractive Indices of Polymers by QSPR
The refractive index n is a basic optical property of polymers that is directly related to other optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. The refractive index is also widely used in material science. The specific refractive index increment (dn/dc) is an important parameter in light scattering measurements of dilute polymer solutions, which can be used for the determination of molecular wei...
