Coarticulatory variability and directionality in [s, ..]: an EPG study

چکیده

Articulatory properties of the sibilants [ , ] and non-sibilant [ ] were studied for VCV syllables in Japanese, using the technique of electropalatography. We examined the relation between constriction width and location, and the nature of coarticulatory variability and directionality, specific to the two fricative categories. The results allow us to discuss the phonetic basis of the ‘precision’ in fricative articulations.

Articulatory constraints and coronal stops: an EPG study

This study explores articulatory and coarticulatory properties of the coronal stop articulations [ , , ] in Japanese, using the technique of electropalatography (EPG). We examine the spatiotemporal characteristics of linguopalatal contact patterns, closure duration, and intergestural coordination, relating them to factors of the articulatory control mechanisms. The results bear on issues in mod...

An EMA study of VCV coarticulatory direction.

This study addresses three issues that are relevant to coarticulation theory in speech production: whether the degree of articulatory constraint model (DAC model) accounts for patterns of the directionality of tongue dorsum coarticulatory influences; the extent to which those patterns in tongue dorsum coarticulatory direction are similar to those for the tongue tip; and whether speech motor con...

Groove Width in Croatian Voiced and Voiceless Postalveolar Fricatives

The aim of this investigation is to use a newly available electropalatography (EPG) index to quantify groove width characteristics in Croatian postalveolar fricatives. Six normal adult speakers of Croatian produced 648 nonsense VCV sequences (V: /i/, /a/, /u/; C: //, //). Anterior groove width (AGW), posterior groove width (PGW), intraspeaker and interspeaker variability were quantified. Resu...

An investigation of lingual coarticulation resistance using ultrasound

Introduction This paper uses ultrasound data in order to explore the extent to which lingual coarticulatory resistance for front lingual consonants and vowels in VCV sequences increases with the place and manner of articulation requirements involved in their production. Coarticulatory resistance for a given consonant or vowel is a measure of its degree of articulatory variability as a function ...
