چکیده

We present a method for generating femtosecond duration x-ray pulses using a single-pass free-electron laser (FEL). This method uses an energy-chirped electron beam to produce a frequency-chirped x-ray pulse through selfamplified spontaneous emission (SASE). After the undulator we consider passing the radiation through a monochromator. The frequency is correlated to the longitudinal position within the pulse, and therefore, by selecting a narrow bandwidth, a short temporal pulse will be transmitted. The short pulse radiation is used to seed a second undulator, where the radiation is amplified to saturation. In addition to short pulse generation, this scheme has the ability to control shot-to-shot fluctuations in the central wavelength due to electron beam energy jitter. We present calculations of the radiation characteristics produced by a chirpedbeam two-stage SASE-FEL, and consider the performance of the chirped-beam two-stage option for the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS).

Femtosecond X-ray Pulses from a Spatially Chirped Electron Bunch in a SASE FEL

We propose a simple method to produce short x-ray pulses using a spatially chirped electron bunch in a SASE FEL. The spatial chirp is generated using an rf deflector which produces a transverse offset (in y and/or y′) correlated with the longitudinal bunch position. Since the FEL gain is very sensitive to an initial offset in the transverse phase space at the entrance of the undulator, only a s...

Development of a Femtosecond Soft X-ray SASE FEL at DESY

In this paper we describe the extension of the soft X-ray SASE FEL at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) at DESY for generation of femtosecond pulses. The idea is based on a technique of \manipulating" the energy spread along the electron bunch. Since the radiation ampli cation process is extremely sensitive to the value of the energy spread, only that part of the electron bunch radiates which has l...

Frequency Chirped SASE FEL

We present a statistical analysis of the temporal and spectral properties of SASE radiation from an energy-chirped electron beam passing through a long undulator. It is found that the coherence time is independent of the chirp, while the range of spectral coherence is linearly proportional to it. We consider the use of a monochromator to pick out a small temporal slice of the radiation output. ...

Chirped pulse amplification at VISA-FEL

Chirped beam manipulations are of the great interest to the FEL (Free Electron Laser) community as potential means of obtaining ultra short X-ray pulses. The experiment is under way at the ATF (Accelerator Test Facility) at BNL (Brookhaven National Laboratory) to study the FEL process limits with the under-compressed chirped electron beam. High gain near-saturation SASE operation was achieved w...
