چکیده

Recent work has shown the beneficial effects of a proprietary mixture of three non-digestible carbohydrates: konjac glucomannan, xanthan and alginate and these effects have been linked with a synergistic interaction observable with analytical ultracentrifugation, rheological and NMR measurements. These observations have been supported by fundamental dilute solution viscosity studies. Preparations of konjac glucomannan, xanthan and alginate have been checked with regards their molecular integrity (molar mass distribution) using a newly established method based on the analytical ultracentrifuge. The intrinsic viscosity behaviour for each of the individual polysaccharides were estimated at low ionic strength I (10M) and found to be (2090±120) ml/g, (4430±340) ml/g and (3460±330) ml/g for konjac glucomannan, xanthan and alginate respectively and at (10M) (2350±200) ml/g, (3370±310) ml/g and (1210±50) ml/g respectively. The intrinsic viscosity [η] was then determined for a proprietary mixture of the three (known as “PGX®”) at both ionic strengths and compared with the predicted values for a non-interacting mixture. In I=10 M solvent a significant difference was observed (3090+250) ml/g compared with the predicted value (2350+300) ml/g, although at higher ionic strength the interaction appears to have gone: [η] = (1990+250) ml/g compared with the predicted value of (2180+300) ml/g. This appears to reinforce the earlier observations that in PGX® there is a synergistic interaction which is ionic strength sensitive.

Effect of non-fiber carbohydrates on in vitro first order kinetics disappearance of cellulose

An in vitro experiment was conducted to determine the effect of supplemental non-fiber carbohydrate(NFC) on the disappearance kinetics of cellulose (Ce) by mixed ruminal microorganisms. Non-supplementedor NFC supplemented cellulose (467 mg NFC/g cellulose as sucrose (CeSu) or starch (CeSt) or a 1:1 mixtureof sucrose + starch (CeSuSt)) were incubated for 24, 48, and 96 h at 39°C. After each incu...

Intramolecular crosslinking of poly(vinyl alcohol)

Poly(vinyl alcohol) is crosslinked in dilute solution (c = 0.1 wt%) with glutaraldehyde. The reaction product is characterized by viscometry and gel permeation chromatography (g.p.c.). The intrinsic viscosity decreases with increasing degree of crosslinking and does not depend on temperature. G.p.c. reveals that the reaction product is not homogeneous, but consists of a mixture of particles wit...

Evidence supporting oral sensitivity to complex carbohydrates independent of sweet taste sensitivity in humans

Compared to simple sugars, complex carbohydrates have been assumed invisible to taste. However, two recent studies proposed that there may be a perceivable taste quality elicited by complex carbohydrates independent of sweet taste. There is precedent with behavioural studies demonstrating that rats are very attracted to complex carbohydrates, and that complex carbohydrates are preferred to simp...

4 Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the major source of energy in diets fed to dairy cattle and usually comprise 60 to 70 percent of the total diet. The main function of carbohydrates is to provide energy for rumen microbes and the host animal. A secondary, but essential, function of certain types of carbohydrates is to maintain the health of the gastrointestinal tract. The carbohydrate fraction of feeds is a co...
