Influence of Vegetation on Flow Structure in Floodplains and Wetlands
نویسنده
چکیده
Flume studies have been carried out to investigate flow structure for relatively low velocities and inundation for vegetation typical to floodplains and wetlands, such as grasses and bushes. Mean velocity profiles and turbulence characteristics from flume experiments on three different natural vegetal roughness types are reported. Two relatively new approaches for describing vertical velocity profiles are evaluated with new data.

Determination of flow resistance caused by non-submerged woody vegetation
This paper investigates the determination of flow resistance caused by stiff and flexible woody vegetation. A new procedure has been developed which allows the determination of friction factor f or Manning’s n using measurable characteristics of vegetation and flow. The procedure is capable of predicting flow resistance due to: (1) leafless bushes or trees and (2) leafy bushes or trees. The app...
متن کاملEffectiveness of vegetation on phosphorus removal from reclaimed water by a subsurface flow wetland in a coastal area.
This work was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and influence factors of vegetation on phosphorus (P) removal from reclaimed water in constructed wetlands. Comparisons were conducted between one pilot scale subsurface flow wetland (P-SSFW) and two demonstration subsurface flow wetlands, which were series-wound and named as first subsurface flow wetland (F-SSFW), and second subsurface flow...
متن کاملEffects of long-term flooding on biogeochemistry and vegetation development in floodplains; a mesocosm experiment to study interacting effects of land use and water quality
Raising safety levees and reinforcing dykes is not a sufficient and sustainable solution to the intense winter and summer floods occurring with increasing frequency in Eastern Europe. An alternative, creating permanently flooded floodplain wetlands, requires improved understanding of ecological consequences. A 9 month mesocosm study (starting in January), under natural light and temperature con...
متن کاملPollutant removal by Canna Generalis in tropical constructed wetlands for domestic wastewater treatment
Constructed wetlands have not been commonly used in Vietnam due to the lack of information in the selection of proper types of constructed wetlands, type of reeds, design parameters and performance efficiency, in tropical climates. This paper focuses on Canna generalis, which is a common reed and easy to grow both in water and wet land conditions. Two kinds of hybrid constructed wetlan...
متن کاملPlant ecology of Australia's tropical floodplain wetlands: a review.
AIMS Despite the biodiversity values of the freshwater floodplains of northern Australia being widely recognized, there has not been a concomitant investment in developing the extent of knowledge of the basic functions and ecological processes that underpin the ecological character of these habitats. This review addresses the extent of our knowledge on the plant ecology of these wetlands and co...
