Predicting innovative alternations in Korean verb paradigms

چکیده
In Korean verbal inflection, all forms in the paradigm (A-suffix, C-suffix, or ɨ-suffix forms) suffer from neutralization of some lexical contrasts, and there is no single form of the paradigm from which one can correctly predict all the other forms in the paradigm. Nevertheless, a survey of child errors and historical change show that the attested reanalyses are overwhelmingly based on ambiguities in A-forms, rather than in other affixal contexts (Kang 2006). In this study we conducted a computational modeling of learning of inflected forms of 952 Korean verbs using the Minimal Generalization Learner algorithm (MGL; Albright and Hayes 2002, 2003) to account for this striking asymmetry. The simulation result shows that A-suffix form correctly predicts the other forms in the paradigm at a higher rate than C-suffix form or ɨsuffix form does, indicating that the A-suffix form is indeed the most informative form of the paradigm. This is in line with the previous studies showing that learners designate the most informative form as a privileged base form (Albright 2002, 2008). We compare the model’s errors with attested child errors and historical changes.

متن کاملSequence Tagging for Verb Conjugation in Romanian
Verbs in Romanian sometimes manifest local irregularities in the form of alternating letters. We present a sequence tagging based method for learning stem alternations and ending sequences. Supervised training is based on a morphological dictionary, with a few regular expression paradigms encoded by hand. Our best model improves upon previous machine learning approaches to Romanian verb conjuga...
متن کاملVerb Classes and Alternations
In this report, we investigate the relationship between the semantic and syntactic properties of verbs. Our work is based on the English Verb Classes and Alternations of (Levin, 1993). We explore how these classes are manifested in other languages, in particular, in Bangla, German, and Korean. Our report includes a survey and classiication of several hundred verbs from these languages into the ...
متن کاملBase-driven leveling in Yiddish verb paradigms
A noteworthy feature of Yiddish present tense verbal inflection is that, unlike many other Germanic languages, Yiddish has virtually no irregular stem vowel changes. Whereas Middle High German (the source language for Yiddish verbal inflection1) had numerous subclasses of verbs with different patterns of present tense vowel alternations, Yiddish verbs have the same vowel for all persons and num...
متن کاملA Generative Perspective on Verb Alternations
Verb alternations have been researched extensively in linguistics, but they have not yet received a systematic treatment in natural language generation systems; consequently, generators cannot make informed choices among alternatives. As a step towards overcoming this discrepancy, we review some linguistic work on several prominent alternations, revise and extend it, and suggest a set of rules ...
