Limitations of electric impedance plethysmography.

چکیده
Klectrie impedance plethysmography has been offered as a substitute for mechanical plethysmography and would be particularly suitable for regions in which the mechanical method cannot be applied. A comparative investigation of mechanical and impedance plethysmograms, taken simultaneously from a finger or a forearm, revealed that, while the normal pulsations were reproduced reasonably well, electric impedance plethysmography cannot be employed to determine volume changes following venous occlusion. The reasons are discussed.

New Perspectives in Rheoencephalography
One of the most important advances in biomedical engineering has been the ability to inspect inside the body without opening it. In this sense, rheoencephalography (REG) is an electromedical technique used to assess the cerebral blood flow (CBF) by noninvasive electrical impedance methods, using electrodes attached to the scalp surface. This technique was first proposed by Polzer and Schuhfried...
متن کاملEvaluation of cardiac parameters using electrical impedance plethysmography.
UNLABELLED Impedance plethysmography is a method for determining changes in body tissue volumes, based on the measurement of electric impedance at the body surface. Because it is a non-invasive and cost-effective method to measure and analyze hemodynamics, it would bring to physiologists very important diagnostic information for the continuous care of critical patients with hemodynamic disorder...
متن کاملRespiratory Monitoring: Advantages of Inductive Plethysmography over Impedance Pneumography
Inductive plethysmography and impedance pneumography are two non-invasive technologies for measuring respiratory function. The following report describes the advantages of inductive plethysmography, which include greater accuracy and sensitivity; the ability to assess thoracoabdominal coordination; and the minimization of motion artifact. Together, these properties make inductive plethysmograph...
متن کاملBioelectrical Impedance Methods for Noninvasive Health Monitoring: A Review.
Under the alternating electrical excitation, biological tissues produce a complex electrical impedance which depends on tissue composition, structures, health status, and applied signal frequency, and hence the bioelectrical impedance methods can be utilized for noninvasive tissue characterization. As the impedance responses of these tissue parameters vary with frequencies of the applied signal...
متن کاملA 4-compartment model based validation of air displacement plethysmography, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, skinfold technique & bio-electrical impedance for measuring body fat in Indian adults
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Many methods are available for measuring body fat of an individual, each having its own advantages and limitations. The primary objective of the present study was to validate body fat estimates from individual methods using the 4-compartment (4C) model as reference. The second objective was to obtain estimates of hydration of fat free mass (FFM) using the 4C model. MET...
