Long Term Effects in Volcanic Areas Observed by Differential Sar Interferometry

چکیده
We investigate the possibility to apply differential SAR interferometry (DIFSAR) techniques to analyse long term phenomena occurring in volcanic areas. The considered test site is represented by the Etna volcano area located in southern Italy; presented DIFSAR experiments show the existence of a long term deformation effect that can be interpreted as an actively growing anticline, beneath the urban area of Catania, related to the distal motion of Mount Etna’s decollement.

Airborne differential SAR interferometry: first results at L-band
In recent years, differential interferometry using spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors has become an established technique for detecting and monitoring centimeter-scale deformations of the earth’s surface, as well as glacier flows and land slides. Although often very efficient, the use of spaceborne SAR data has several drawbacks, namely phase artifacts caused by atmospheric effec...

Satellite time series have already provided key measurements to retrieve information on the dynamic nature of Earth surface processes. We exploit in this work the availability of the large archives of spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data acquired by the ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT sensors of the European Space Agency (ESA) during the 1992-2009 time period, in order to investigate long term su...
متن کاملInversion of SAR data in active volcanic areas by optimization techniques
The inversion problem concerns the identification of parameters of a volcanic source causing observable changes in ground deformation data recorded in volcanic areas. In particular, this paper deals with the inversion of ground deformation measured by using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometry and an inversion approach formulated in terms of an optimization problem is proposed. Based o...
متن کاملThe Application of Ers Sar Interferometry for the Assessment of Hazards Related to Slope Motion and Subglacial Volcanism
Methods and applications of ERS SAR interferometry for monitoring mass movements on mountain slopes and surface deformation in volcanic areas have been investigated in order to explore the operational potential of interferometry for the assessment of natural hazards. A statistical analysis was carried out in a region of the Eastern Alps to study the potential of SAR for monitoring slope motion ...
