Agent Models of Catastrophic Events

چکیده
The study of complex phenomena, such as the interplay between human and natural systems, requires models. To allow for an orderly study of the effects of individual actions the model must comprise different scales of granularity, individuals and aggregates. In a joint research project between IIASA (Austria), DSV (Sweden) and the Hungarian Academy of Science, the flooding problem of Upper Tisza in Hungary is investigated. From a flood management perspective, different possible mitigation strategies and strategies for distribution of the financial responsibility, are investigated. Multi-agent based simulations are used to investigate the feasibility of different strategies, with a focus on different insurance programs. The simulation model is implemented in Matlab and offers possibilities for scenario generation as well as for strategy optimisation.

Method of Grading Subway Stations Based on Evacuation Capability: A Quantitative Method
Stations are the main components of the subway systems. Despite the progress in the construction and maintenance, stations have always been exposed to the natural and man-made disasters. In such incidents, the station’s evacuation capability has a direct relation with a passenger's life. Various factors affect the station's evacuation capability. Investigation of these factors and evaluation of...
متن کاملMulti-Agent Planning under Uncertainty with Rare Catastrophic Events
This dissertation abstract outlines some of theoretical frameworks for modeling and simulation of multi-agent planning problems with rare catastrophic events. In particular, this abstract will focus on a wildfire surveillance application using unmanned aircraft. The thesis abstract presents an initial model and results of a preliminary study.
متن کاملThe Response of Fluvial Systems to Large Flood Events
In the summer of 2001, an intense thunderstorm in southeastern Caspian Sea triggered a catastrophic flood in the Madarsoo basin . Use of methods including high-resolution aerial photographs and satellite images interpretation, multi-date mapping, hydraulic calculations and field observations made possible the documentation of the geomorphic impacts on the Madarsoo River and its tributaries. Geo...
متن کاملDouble-layer Dynamics Theory and Human Migration after Catastrophic Events
This paper presents a new application of double-layer dynamics theory (DLD) in modelling dynamics of human migration problems reformulated as transportation networks problems. Recent results in DLD allow for generalizing existing migration models by accounting for sudden (discontinuous) changes in migration flows as a consequence of, for example, natural disasters or catastrophic events.
متن کاملSpatial structure induced by marine reserves shapes population responses to catastrophes in mathematical models.
Catastrophic events such as oil spills, hypoxia, disease, and major predation events occur in marine ecosystems and affect fish populations. Previous evaluations of the performance of spatial management alternatives have not considered catastrophic events. We investigate the effects of local and global catastrophic events on populations managed with and without no-take marine reserves and with ...
