Topic and Topic-Comment Structures in First Language Acquisition of Mandarin Chinese
نویسنده
چکیده
The prevalence of topic-comment structures is one of the most distinctive features of Mandarin Chinese. It has been shown that young children in the early stages of syntax acquisition have the ability to distinguish between the notions of subject and topic; however, the production frequency and the types of topiccomment structures produced by young children in spontaneous speech have yet to be determined. This study examines the production of topic-comment structures in Chinese children between ages 2;2 and 6;0. The result shows that children begin producing topic-comment structures as early as 2;2 and reach adult like production by age 4;0. However, the production of topic-comment structures is infrequent in child speech and this is partly attributed to children’s preference of canonical word order schemas.

Markedness and Second Language Acquisition of Word Order in Mandarin Chinese
The study explores the difficulties of native English speakers in acquiring the Chinese word order, aiming to relate it to the markedness theories. According to the Differential Markedness Hypothesis (DMH), the degrees of learner difficulty in second language acquisition can be predicted according to the degrees of typological markedness between learners’ first language (L1) and their second la...
متن کاملAre Topic Constructions Licensed by A'Movement in Mandarin Chinese? - A Preliminary Study
Topic structures are conventionally classified into two types in Mandarin Chinese, namely dangling and non-dangling topics. The present study concurs that non-dangling topics might be licensed by A’ movement (e.g. Chen 1995), in the sense that they might be interpreted as an operator A’-binding their co-indexed variable, usually an empty category, in a corresponding comment clause. As regards s...
متن کاملL1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners
This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...
متن کاملErrors in the Written Production of Chinese Learners of English: A Typological Perspective
This study aimed to examine errors in the written production of Chinese learners of English from a typological perspective. The thirty-nine participants were native speakers of Chinese enrolled in an undergraduate English course in Taiwan. Data were collected from a translation-elicitation task which involved ten Chinese sentences with Chinese TP (Topic-Prominence) features described by Li and ...
متن کاملA Logic-Based Government-Binding Parser for Mandarin Chinese
Mandarin Chinese is a highly flexible and context-sensitive language. It is difficult to do the case marking and index assignment during the parsing of Chinese sentences. This paper proposes a logic-based Government-Binding approach to treat this problem. The grammar formalism is specified in a formal way. Uniform treatments of movements, arbitrary number of movement non-terminals, automatic de...
