چکیده

When doing research, biologists need a source with up-to-date information on species. Books are a reliable source for well-known species but they do not cover the latest research results available. Other publications might be too specific, and it takes some time to retrieve required results. A potential solution for these problems is a centralised database with distributed ways of access. From a computer scientist’s point of view this paper shows how to deal with hierarchies in relational databases, how to use multimedia objects, and how to apply these approaches in a web application. The project implements such a system placing the emphasis on usability and extensibility.

On the Transitivity of Hypernym-Hyponym Relations in Data-Driven Lexical Taxonomies

Taxonomy is indispensable in understanding natural language. A variety of large scale, usage-based, data-driven lexical taxonomies have been constructed in recent years. Hypernym-hyponym relationship, which is considered as the backbone of lexical taxonomies can not only be used to categorize the data but also enables generalization. In particular, we focus on one of the most prominent properti...

Business Model Formation within the Online News Market: The Core + Complement Business Model Framework

The business model literature is both rich and rapidly-growing. Authors identify special-purpose business and eBusiness models – and, increasingly, develop taxonomies of business models types. But, in searching for a comparatively simple way to understand the components of a “typical” internet business model, as part of our work for the EC research project SimWeb, we found that these taxonomies...

Topographies of Hate: Islamophobia in Cyberia

Islamophobia’s occurrence in any particular country has little do with the presence of Muslim; it is possible to be Islamophobic when there are virtually no Muslim around. This because the lack of Muslims is filled by the surplus of Islamophobic representations. This surplus of representations is now increasingly reliant on the internet. There are many studies reporting on Islamophobia on the i...

Supervised Distributional Hypernym Discovery via Domain Adaptation

Lexical taxonomies are graph-like hierarchical structures that provide a formal representation of knowledge. Most knowledge graphs to date rely on is-a (hypernymic) relations as the backbone of their semantic structure. In this paper, we propose a supervised distributional framework for hypernym discovery which operates at the sense level, enabling large-scale automatic acquisition of disambigu...

Data Analysis Project: Semi-Supervised Discovery of Named Entities and Relations from the Web

This project studies semi-supervised discovery of named entities, relational entities and prepositional phrase attachments within a read-the-web framework. Meanings of an entity can be improvised and updated faster in the internet world than printed references. The main idea of this project is to study the feasibility of characterizing entities by web content directly. The approach is that cont...
