(Anti-)locality and A-scrambling in Japanese

چکیده
In this paper, I investigate binding effects triggered by long-distance scrambling in Japanese. The first purpose of the study is to describe an environment where long-distance scrambling can feed A-binding and make a generalization about it. The generalization made in this paper is that Long-distance scrambling can feed Abinding only if i) the embedded subject is null, and ii) a bindee is contained in the matrix object (or in the matrix subject if there is no matrix indirect object). The second purpose is to give an analysis to derive the generalization without recourse to A/A'-distinction. As discussed in the paper, there are some problems in an approach to capture binding phenomena resorting to A/A'-distinction. Therefore, I propose an analysis to derive the generalization without using the notion of A/A'-distinction. Japanese Scrambling and the Dynamics of On-line Processing
This paper shows how with syntax defined as the progressive projection of semantic representations along the left-right dimension provided by the sequence of words, natural explanations can be provided for local and nonlocal scrambling of NPs in Japanese which follow from general principles of tree growth, explaining their different interaction with quantified NPs while nevertheless retaining a...
متن کاملScrambling in German and the non-locality of local TDGs
Existing analyses of German scrambling phenomena within TAG-related formalisms all use non-local variants of TAG. However, there are good reasons to prefer local grammars, in particular with respect to the use of the derivation structure for semantics. Therefore this paper proposes to use local TDGs, a TAG-variant generating tree descriptions that shows a local derivation structure. However the...
متن کاملSyntactic Edges and Linearization
In this thesis, I investigate the question of how the units of a linguistic expression are linearly ordered in syntax. In particular, I examine interactions between locality conditions on movement and the mapping between syntax and phonology. I show that Cyclic Linearization of syntactic structure and constraints on domain-internal movement of multiple specifiers predict unique ordering restric...
متن کاملThe Complexity of Scrambling in Japanese: A TAG Approach
In this article, I present Japanese local and long-distance scrambling and restrictions to this phenomenon. I will argue that Japanese scrambling is too complex to be adequately represented with TAG. Instead, I will use a variant of TAG, namely TLMCTAG. Subsequently, I also will propose to regard other scrambling languages, such as German, or Russian, in complexity classes, which is basically d...
متن کاملToward a Better Understanding of Japanese Scramblings: What Makes Long-distance Scrambling of Subject (Im)possible?
In this paper, I show that, by gathering evidence from the past literature and by presenting new evidence, subjects can undergo scrambling in Japanese, contrary to Saito’s (1985) Ban on Scrambling of Subject (BOSS), which has been a classic and wide-spread claim. In so doing, I argue that Japanese scrambling in general is subject to a version of minimality/superiority effect, a Feature-based Mi...
