چکیده

The glottal area at a mid-vowel position is calculated for 9 different voicing types (medium, loud and soft Ievels; mid, high and low pitch; normal, breathy and pressed phonation) for 10 different speakers, using an ori:fice equation. Considerable variability is found across speakers and voicing types, but some general consistencies are noted. Higher fl.owrates and larger glottal areas are associated with breathy voicing, whilst the opposite is true for pressed phonation. Compared to medium level, loud and soft voicing produce a corresponding increase and decrease respectively in subglottal pressure (Psg). Volume fl.owrate of air and subglottal pressure tend to increase when pitch is raised. INTRODUCTION The glottal area function is an important parameter in articulatory synthesis. Glottal areas can be estimated by taking into account the glottal width observed on high speed film of the vocal folds (Titze, 1980). Direct measurement of vocal fold lengths and glottal width can be made by means of a stereo-:fiberscope (Sawashima and Miyazaki, 1974; Honda et al., 1980). A less invasive method uses airfl.ow and air pressure data in an ori:fice equation to estimate the glottal area. Many different kinds of data point to a mean glottal area of about 0.05cm2 for voicing in adults

Glottal area patterns in numerically simulated diplophonia

The presentation explores diplophonia via numerical simulations of glottal vibrations. The aim of the study is to improve the understanding of glottal wall vibration and area waveform patterns of nonmodal phonation as observed via laryngeal highspeed videos. Diplophonia has been described as the simultaneous perception of two pitches during voicing. A broader definition is the vibration of diff...

Glottal stops before word-initial vowels in American English: distribution and acoustic characteristics

Despite abundant research on the distribution of glottal stops and glottalization in English and other languages, it is still unclear which factors matter most in predicting where glottal stops occur. In this study, logistic mixed-effects regression modeling is used to predict the occurrence of word-initial full glottal stops vs. no voicing irregularity. The results indicate that prominence and...

Noise robust digit recognition using a glottal radar sensor for voicing detection

A voicing feature is used in concatenation to MFCC features to increase the performance of digit recognition at both low and high SNRs. The problem of noise robust extraction of the voicing feature is solved by using the glottal electromagnetic sensor (GEMS). The GEMS device provides reliable voicing information at all SNRs and noise environments. It is shown that although the voicing feature i...

A Neurally Motivated Technique for Voicing Detection and F 0 Estimation for Speech

Speech consists of alternating voiced and unvoiced sections. Voiced speech consists of multiple harmonics of some fundamental (F0); unvoiced speech consists of silence, or ltered noise. Here, speech is wideband bandpass ltered into many bands (modelling the cochlea). Each lter output is rectiied (modelling the organ of Corti hair cell action), and bandpass ltered by convolution with the diieren...

A quasi-glottogram signal.

A novel, noninvasive experiment is proposed that reliably shows the strength of glottal oscillations. The quasi-glottogram (QGG) signal is generated from a microphone array that is trained to approximate the electroglottogram signal. The QGG may be useful to improve estimates of whether speech is voiced, to quantify partial voicing, and to reduce the phoneme effect when measuring the amplitude ...
