Title of Document: LONGITUDINAL SPACE-CHARGE WAVES INDUCED BY ENERGY MODULATIONS Brian L. Beaudoin, Master of Science, 2008 Directed By: Professor Patrick G. O’Shea and Professor Rami A. Kishek Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering High intensity beams that are space-charge dominated are important for applications such as free electron lasers that require high intensity and low emittance beams. Modulations in energy or density can induce space-charge waves at low energies which could be problematic at higher energies. This thesis is a study of longitudinal space-charge waves induced by energy modulations within a highly space-charge dominated beam propagating in the University of Maryland Electron Ring (UMER). Using an induction cell, we present the first UMER experimental results on the design and application of the cell to place energy perturbations. We compare the results to one-dimensional cold fluid theory and simulation. We allow the perturbation to propagate for over 60 m so that we can get a turn by turn measurement of the experimental sound speed. In some of the turn by turn data, we obtain a 4.8% disagreement between the experimentally measured sound speed and theory. LONGITUDINAL SPACE-CHARGE WAVES INDUCED BY ENERGY MODULATIONS

متن کاملWave Propagation at the Boundary Surface of Elastic Layer Overlaying a Thermoelastic Without Energy Dissipation Half-space
The present investigation is to study the surface wave propagation at imperfect boundary between an isotropic thermoelastic without energy dissipation half-space and an isotropic elastic layer of finite thickness. The penetration depth of longitudinal, transverse, and thermal waves has been obtained. The secular equation for surface waves in compact form is derived after developing the mathemat...
متن کاملMicrobunch Amplification in the European XFEL
Linac-based X-ray-free-electron lasers (XFELs) require very short bunches of highbrightness electron beams with peak currents of the order of kilo-Amperes. These bunches cannot be produced directly in guns because space charge forces would destroy the brilliance within a short distance [1]. Increasing bunch peak currents with longitudinal compression at beam energies high enough to suppress spa...
